Did you hand over both together? if so there’s really no excuse.

Yes, I did, with the TdeS inside the picture page of the passport and sticking out of the top so it could not be missed. As I said in the original post, he just opened it and stamped it without looking at me or anything else. It all took about 2 seconds.
Edit: I’ve just realised that the passport would normally be scanned with a machine to register my entry, and I’m sure the machines were there, but this guy certainly didn’t use it. Has anyone any experience of this ?
Long shot but does anyone know if Irish passports are being stamped when travelling into France from the UK?
I have no personal experience but I’d be staggered if they were as they are still EU passports and no other EU countries are having their passports stamped regardless of where they arrive from 
Hmmm I think I’ll hand my carte de sejour separately first, then, next time, if your technique of handing the carte de sejour on top, obscuring the photo page of passport, did not work.
I think I’m not leaving the country for a while more …
