@Bonzocat , we each had a separate problem with our cards.

My impression is that CA’s system requires you to speak to (what seems like) a separate organisation. They they organise a virtual card for you to use while they print and send a real one.

Being with Britline helped, because our conseillère told us what would happen, and it wasn’t straightforward. I suspect they all understand the system so well that they assume customers do too.

I read reviews of CA’s virtual card recently when I had to cancel my physical card. The reviews were not good. In the end, I used OH’s card for a week or so.

If I hadn’t had the option of OH’s card I would have just asked the branch to give me cash to see me through the week.

I saw my conseiller at the CIC yesterday. He offered me 2.3% for 13 months.

In the end I actually opted for another compte à terme évolutif where the rate increases every year for 5 years. You can access it if necessary though. It’s great if - like us - you can’t be bothered constantly shopping around for the best rate and just want to stuff it somewhere safe-ish and forget about it.
It was refreshing to talk to a conseiller who understood our laziness and lack of interest in anything even vaguely complicated and didn’t try to flog us life insurance.

After 3 months of emails & phone calls to my local branch of Credit Agricole and their money transfer and fraud departments, my account has at last been unblocked.

I’d composed a final threatening email to CA but asked ChatGPT to rewrite it. As a result, I received a phone call from CA the same day and the matter was finally concluded.

ChatGPT said my threatening email needed language that French banks take seriously, as follows…

“I am currently unable to make transfers between my current account and my LDDS savings account.

Following your instructions, I have contacted both the transfers department (09.74.75.76.77) and the fraud department (09.74.75.51.17) on several occasions. Despite this, the situation remains unresolved and my accounts are still blocked.

I have now been informed again by the transfers department that they have sent an email to your branch, requiring your response in order to proceed. This email has been sent twice.

As long as no reply is provided by your branch, the transfers department is unable to lift the restriction on my account.

This situation has now gone on for too long. If it is not resolved promptly, I will have no option but to seek external advice, including from a notaire, and to consider moving my accounts elsewhere after more than 20 years as a client.

I would be grateful for your immediate attention to this matter.”

I used ChatGPT instead of Claude because the former and I had had prior numerous interchanges about CA and how they operate.

Yes indeed, I would have been gone long before that and in fact I did depart from CA many years ago. But I am interested in this ChatGPT that so many have mentioned. Can it be used solely as a translation tool rather than being creative? For instance, Although I read and translate French fairly easily and quickly, to save time and effort I use something that means highlighting a sentence then clicking on translate. It isn’t infallible and happily my own skill usually notices its mistakes before I send.

Whichever tool you choose to translate - ChatGPT, Claude, Google or other – the translation is never the same it seems. But what is produced by any of them is very likely easily understood by the French. When in doubt I sometimes double check by translating what has been translated back into English using different tools until I feel ‘that’ll do!’.

Google Translate – “J’ai utilisé ChatGPT au lieu de Claude car j’avais déjà eu de nombreux échanges avec le premier au sujet de CA et de leur fonctionnement.”

You’ll note that Claude & Google used CA, whereas ChatGPT knew CA meant Credit Agricole.

Yes I see that all 3 of those would be nearer to my thought regarding the right way of doing it. I was surprised to see it translate disappointment as deception the other day, but I used it in a message with some misgivings (because I was happy to register disappointment) but I have just tried Word Preference and it agrees. A veritable faux ami perhaps? :thinking:

It is correct, but I still find it slightly uncomfortable to use and tend to go for désabusé(e) instead.

Decevoir is indeed a false friend. Déçu does not mean deceived, it means disappointed. If you wanted to say deceived you could use trompé / dupé / abusé.

So did I, but I was in a hurry and in any case I was complaining about poor service so thought it didn’t matter if I let it go…so I did.

BYW it worked too, got a reply within a minute explaining that all would be sorted after today. :joy:

A useful tip when using AI to translate your text David, is to tell it the style in which it is to be written - formal,friendly, funny and then, if it is important, copy the answer to another AI and ask for a check on style and grammar.

But I still don’t know the name/origin of the one I am using now which doesn’t always work because various printed material on line won’t let it .

Just to mention again - highlight text, right click mouse, click on translate to wherever.

I think that technique depends on which browser you are using.

If you use Win 11 you can call up CoPilot (my current favourite AI) by hitting the keys CTRL + C

I’ll try that as I am on Win 11, and Firefox. Also on Chrome simply to be able to video call on FB, Meta have fallen out with Firefox. :roll_eyes:

Like you, I rate Copilot highly and was very impressed when it recently asked me -for a translation - if I wanted informal, formal or “publication standard”. I chose the latter as I was helping somebody to translate a significant amount of French text into English for a history book. I only needed to change 1 word out of hundreds, the rest of the translation was perfect (in my view).

Just tried it and it led me into a long discourse about what it thought I wanted it to do.
Not all bad news though, on the way there I realised that highlight + right click + translate, which I have been using, is co-pilot. :roll_eyes: :joy:
