Cat parasite treatment

Bravecto update. My cat has bad arthritis and doesn’t/can’t groom himself, and whenever I sit down, he launches himself onto my lap, when I take the opportunity to use the flea comb, and always find a good half dozen fleas + loads of flea dirt. This is a routine that occurs twice a day.

He had his dose of Bravecto yesterday, and this morning we had our usual grooming session, when I said out loud, excuse my language - BLOODY HELL! - there were no fleas and so little flea dirt that meant Bravecto works, and works so very quickly. I combed and combed looking for fleas and couldn’t find any. And 17-year-old Slinks doesn’t seem to be having any side effects. He’s half asleep and purring on my lap right now.

Roll on Bravecto!

Just combed his tail full length and found one mature flea which just lay there, squirming – usually when exposed to light they leap away – this one couldn’t.

Tonight might be a different story as fleas are more active then, but I doubt I’ll find fleas in the quantity found in recent days.

That’s good news.

If it’s that good that’s really good to hear. But are we sure that such a strong treatment is not harmful to the cat ?

I have long ago had to reconcile myself to giving our dogs treatments that may be affecting their health. Having watched two of our dogs die from the after effects of tick bites, I now am resigned to using credelio every month. On the advice of our vet I steer away from the annual or three month treatments since (in her view) in order to give the longer time the remedy starts more potent than needed and finishes up weaker than needed. The monthly remedies are within a narrower range of potency.

There are published side effects but at the moment my cat seems to be totally relaxed and a whole lot less fidgety, and fast asleep on my lap. I’m not worried.

Adverse reactions

In a well-controlled U.S. field study, which included a total of 161 households and 311 treated cats (224 with fluralaner and 87 with a topical active control), there were no serious adverse reactions.

My cats have been on Bravecto for quite a few years now. Happy to report that fleas and more importantly ticks seem to die on contact. I.e. only finding the odd dead tick - and no fleas.

They hate the application - and give me the ‘disgusted’ look before disappearing for hours.

I have 2 longhaired and 1 short-haired cat and Bravecto works well on all…

Update on Bravecto. Since giving my cat Slinks a dose of Bravecto he has become a different cat. Before the treatment he’d leapt onto my lap morning and evening when I’d give him a good combing which he always seemed to need. His coat was always unkempt, maybe due to age and arthritis, and the flea comb was always choked with clumps of hair, so much flea dirt and about half a dozen fleas or so.

Now his coat is smooth and glossy, and when he wants to sit on my lap he stands with his paws on my knee waiting to be picked up, and when I use the comb there’s nothing there – no loose hair no flea dirt and no fleas.

And he is much more relaxed and less fidgety. The flea spot-on treatments I used in the past, and Seresto collars, no longer work. Hope the fleas don’t become immune to Bravecto.

Glad your cat is well on Bravecto. I can tell when it starts wearing off as the boys do pick up the odd flea and start scratching… Its a sign to head to the vet for another quarterly dose. Like you I hope it keeps working…

My dogs began using Bravecto when it first reached UK in 2015 and have been on it every 3 months ever since. Never had ticks or fleas on them, on us or in the house

As far as we can tell, an excellent product!

When satnavs for cars became available in the mid-90s I bought one, I think sometime in the mid-2000s - and it was a life changing event - hopeless with maps. In a funny sort of way having discovered Bravecto for cats is another life changing event! Why is it that I have only just heard about it? All the vets I’ve known over the years always recommended brands other than Bravecto. And I don’t see it on sale in those clinics or in local pharmacies.

Thank you @Porridge & SF contributers!

Guess it depends on the vet. I changed vets after we arrived. The new practise was much more up to date with their recommendations and prescribed Bravecto… It was a revelation and I would not change for anothyer product unless recommended by our vet.

It is by prescription only - hence you won’t find it at a pharmacie or online. But be aware that some cats develop a rash/allergy at the application site, which is why our vet does a follow up by email.

My vet sells Bravecto spot-on but doesn’t have it on display.

I’ve been responsible for about 30 cats all at one time but am down to three, two of which need flea treatment, and neither have shown any side effects, so far. There will be no more pets after these three if I, hopefully, outlive them.

A final word from me on Bravecto spot-on for cats, and flea allergy. One of my cats develops hard crusty scabs along her back, spreading out around the rump of her tail. A couple of years ago I gave her a Seresto collar which cleared the scabs away, but not last year.

Within just a few days of this year’s Bravecto application all scabs have so quickly disappeared!
