Class 3 National Insurance contributions

It’s a pain but it might be worth calling them to get it set up properly.

I’ve lost the plot of what you are doing/have done, sorry.

Don’t forget to add at least 2.5% to that £20 every year, probably more, that might make it more attractive. Of course, then take off the investment return on that £3k. In short, I don’t know what’s for the best there.

I saw your post earlier and, reflecting, still can’t fathom this calculation. So I’ve just quickly googled class 3 NI, I’m assuming the 3K reflects 3 years of these - if class 4 it would be about 15 years? Clicking on the Is it worth paying class 3 voluntary contributions? question, here’s the AI generated text -

For most people, paying Class 3 voluntary National Insurance contributions is a very good financial investment. Each extra qualifying year costs £18.40 per week (about £956.80 for a full tax year in 2026/27) and adds roughly £328 to £358 per year to your future State Pension. You usually breakeven within 3 years of claiming your pension.

There’s a link to money helper.

I wonder, is this pension calculator quoting a figure per year purchased - so for you 3 x figure ? Or with 36 years already, maybe it’s saying the most you can get is 20 / month extra i.e. you only need 1 more year to get the max.

Or even, as the pensions people tend to quote in weeks, are you sure it’s not 20 per week extra?

To me, the maths stated definitely don’t add up with the actuality…

I’ll check again when I’m sober.

I was forced to use UK Gov’s One Login as an esrly user. It was a nightmare and not functional for what was needed. It cost me money as I had to find another way and pay someone “authorised” to do a basic thing the system was supposed to let me do but was totally incompetent at doing.

I’d stay clear till forced to use it if I were you.
