Drugs on the street

The UK has been prudish regarding pornography but it has long been available - more an “under the table” activity rather than one supplied solely by organised criminals (though ovbiously quite a bit of overlap).

However I think there has been rather a lot of completely legal stuff around since the 1970’s

“No matter how you take it, heroin gets to your brain quickly. It’s also easy to get addicted. Even after you use it just one or two times, it can be hard to stop yourself from using again.”

WebMD might not be an ultra-reliable source and I have never taken heroin, so I cannot judge from experience.

However, people do underestimate how easy it is to fall into addiction, whatever the poison (eg cigarettes, sugar…). Particularly kids underestimate how quickly they can get addicted, teenagers are filled with a sense of invincibility. Heroin is known as being one of the most addictive substances known to man, after fentanyl.

If you’ve ever felt thirsty for a glass of wine or beer, you too will know the effects of addiction. In many ways it’s physiological.

Those drawn to and ensnared by substance abuse will oftentimes have underlying conditions which may predispose them to longer-term addiction.

I dont think anyone was saying that some drugs (heroin) ane not addictive

It’s a big step from can be to most people would be.

Absolutely agree. Legalisation will be the only way to reduce the associated violence and other crime. Legalise, tax, and put the money raised into rehab centres for those who want to get clean. My brother’s a surgeon, and he has told me that the morphine that is used to relieve pain for patients costs less than the glass vial it comes in.
But when did logic ever appease the majority of voters?

Heroin is a form of morphine (diacetylmorphine) which is widely used by the medical profession as a strong painkiller.

Of course just because your addictive strong painkiller is prescribed doesn’t stop it being addictive or people getting addicted to it - as the USA is discovering in spades (though I think the biggest problem over there from over-prescription of opioids is oxycodone).

Pfff just tax them and let people buy them and consume them as they like, there are far too many people around as it is and drug addicts (legal or illegal drugs including alcohol) aren’t exactly useful members of society.
Once the customer base disappears the dealers will too, win win.

A modest proposal.

Is this an issue? What women do with their own bodies is their business. It’s women being prostituted that’s the issue surely.

Equally true of nicotine.

It takes two to tango - I exclude victims who are forced into prostitution. My response was to the post that indicated that the sex industry was due only to the indiscretions of men.

Oh, I didn’t read any sex industry stuff. It’s not one of the investment asset classes I’m particulary interested in :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Consumers of pornography and clients of the sex trade are overwhelmingly men. It’s a bit disingenuous to say oh not all men etc because actually we know from circumstantial and other evidence that it isn’t an argument at all. Unless you’ve got solid figures to invalidate that?

While more men consume porn, I would suggest that it’s far from an overwhelming majority. Female consumption of porn is pretty mainstream these days.

I think @rabbit’s “not all men” here was not quite in the same vein as “not all  men are sex pests” but that men and women are both part of the equation where sex work is concerned.

You are quite right that it is mostly men that consume pornography and are the clients of sex workers - Statista has some data

At least 3x more men vs women (78% vs 23%) will have visited a porn website at some point - regular visitors are overwhelmingly men (15% “regularly”+“often” vs 2%)

Stats from PornHub (also courtesy of Statista) are similar - though it appears that the Spanish ladies quite like a bit of porn

Is Pornhub a reliable source, or indeed barometer :face_with_hand_over_mouth: First of all how do they know who is really male or female. Secondly what is the definition of male and female? IMO they need a lot more categories and to introduce a degree of fluidity.

And as for the frequency of visits…

Looks like the internet porn industry is pretty well consolidated and counts for 20% of mobile searches … lucrative or what? No mention of the percentage of searches for tractors

Pornhub is a data business masquerading as a porn business. The only reason they’ve managed to conquer the ‘pornternet’ is through branding and marketing as good as the biggest brands in the world, and an extraordinary amount of data. Generally I would agree with you but in their case I dread to think the stats they have in their arse…nal, they really do have incredible tech.

I’d say yes - partly because the numbers are consistent with other sources and partly because the gender breakdown of their visitors does not strike me as data they would particularly be bothered about hiding or falsifying.

The modern internet would not exist without porn: discuss.

I don’t doubt it, but IMO that only makes them an even more unreliable source :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

We all should, but not this late at night :face_with_hand_over_mouth: A new thread perhaps?
