Electricity, bills, moving companies

Given that I’m on Tempo myself, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

My point was, that the information on Tempo, including the red day prices, is openly available and anyone on Tempo has made a deliberate choice. Nothing is hidden and no one is forced to be on it so I struggle to see the rationale behind the vitriol against it. It’s not like there hasn’t been a ton of posts on here about the tariff and how people deal with it.

I get that it might not be for you but I’ve saved about €120 over the last quarter without any particular effort so it’s horses for courses and you might be better to go back to the standard tariff

Hi, i see you have had a log of replies already. Hooefully these are hrlpful.
In general electricity is the most ecpensive form of energy in France. For this reason it may be worth exploring solar heating and solar water heating.
France is trying to recuce its reliance on fossil fuels and is promoting alternative energy. One option is myocinth (spelling) pellets. These are produced from their farmers. In our region you get grants to install boilers that will use these pellets. We were offered a grant vwhich covered the installation costs and the new boiler.
If you are planning on insulating your property heat pumps are another option to heat the property in winter These can also provide cooling whem if gets hot.

It sounds like a glass half full or half empty situation to me. You have chosen that system and feel that you are being scammed where most people chose it because they saw that they could use it to their advantage. I see no scam but I do see it as an option that I would steer clear of as I rely too much on electric heating during the winter.

It’s only a scam if you don’t know what the rates are. If you don’t like it, its easy to change to another tarif, but whatever you do, stop bleeding moaning about it!

The “justification” is that you get a cheap rate for every other day of the year.
Although a company operating in a competitive market does not have to justify its prices to anyone. It offers a price or in this case a range of tarifs, and customers choose one, or not, as they wish. If you liked it enough to choose it but you don’t like it now, that is not edf’s fault, they did not change the offer.

Anyone moaning about electricity costs should also consider their “equipment” too. For example a freezer or fridge you have had for donkey’s years would no longer be electricity economic hence the big “A/A+” stickers you find on electrical items. Anything old will consume more in many cases than a newer less powerful item and electric radiators are amongst one of the worst examples too - I changed from convector heaters in the old house to brand new more economic timed ones and saved a lot of consomation costs. Old houses that are not extremely well insulated are also letting out all your hard paid for heat so windows should be double glazed minimum, doors fit properly with no gaps underneath on external ones and usage of tumble driers cut down when its a dry day outside - they just gobble power and are bad for your clothes anyway!

Hello there! I am Sheila, currently living in Azille 11700 Aude,Languedoc. I have beem in France for quite a nuber of years…My husband and I bought a ;arge house in this village, which though very dound that required complete renovation in terms of new electrics. water system sand hestinf system and complete decorstion througout.
Through my brother was living then in Itsle zzI lesrnt sbove wood pellet stoves - so we ordered a large one direct from Italy, and 4 werks lster itwas on the doorstep! It is a Melinda Idro - have a look online. We got s professions plumber to fit it in, and my husband installed the flue pipe going up an existing chimmney. Wood pellets are used a lot in France - you can get the wood pelletts from direct suppliers - or our local superarket has them in bags. Best prices are from direct suppliers - but thst means going down with a large car andf losding them up - which means if you have a barn with your house *as we have) they van be stored in the dry - and brought into the house.
Cleaning the flue is done once a year, and I have 2 nice guys that come around and do mine for 95 euros.Tthey have a special machine thst sucks all the soot out of the fire and the chimmney - and in half an hour it is all done. These pellett stoves are increasingly popular now in France - and I would suggest you do some research online as to pricing/availability - at the same time check out the price of pellet stoves from Italy…this stove services 3 floors via water radiators.
I should add, I have a 3 storey house,- we insulated the roof , and had a lot of work to do replacing all the plumbing, electrics etc.
This stove does its job - but you must be ready to hoover it out every 3 days - so we bought a second hand hoover that we keep for specifically that job!
Do some research…if you need more help, pleasecome back to me.

Next dept to me in 66.

Sheila, this is a public forum. Anyone round the world can now see your email address - do you really want a load of spam? Up to you of course.

This is a big surprise for me and set me thinking. 30 odd years ago I considered solar panels but the cost was way too high and I thought that I would be dead long before I made a profit on it.

But now, having been through the death of my wife and having savings I had paid into an account in her name frozen for maybe long after my demise simply because of her awful children, paying out money which might benefit me only in the short term but will deprive them of a large chunk of money I might leave, seems like a good plan.

Thank you for the thought and I will be on the look out for a suitable deal. :grinning:

I think you are deliberately not understanding that on your non-red days you are paying far less for your electricity than you would on any other tariff. Since you are determined to be annoyed with EDF, despite the rest of us trying to explain the benefit, may I offer you an alternative?

We have friends who go down to Spain for winter in their camper. They spend far less per week on everything there than they would if they stayed in France and they have the better weather. Could you do something similar? Most red days are in January and February - miss those two months and you can bask in the pleasant experience of all the EDF blue days through spring, summer and early autumn which are really cheap.

Just a thought.

Hi David,
Investing in renewable energy will also provide longer-term benefits for the planet and the rest of the population.

That too of course. :grinning:

When we pass through Dieppe in a car, the douaniers are rarely interested in what we are carrying [drugs and explosives excluded, so I never bring those into the country  ].

When I came through with a van full of personal belongings the customs lady wanted to see all my paperwork. That will include : your list of all items (see previous reply for details); attestation that you will not sell any of those items within 12 months of moving to France; proof of a place to live (house purchase contract); your visas.

Almost certainly it will not be a wave through, drive on… However, the amount of detail gone into might vary by time of day. Arriving on the late ferry (22h) might help. There are a couple of cheap hotels in Dieppe to put your heads down before driving south.

I hope not.
