There’s an article about EES today in Gaurdian - extra resources for start of UK hols next week
and this is an interesting article from last year - evidently the EES machines at Dover will be at the western dock, a mile away…. I liked this phrase “Years in the planning, and years in the postponement: EES day has finally arrived.”
I’ve never seen EES at Dover, and on recent trip to UK in May, none at Calais and none at Dover on return - someone UK non-France resident in the ferry boarding queue said their passport hadn’t been stamped - all year evidently. The guard spent about 5 minutes examining our two little piles of each set of three documents -passport, expired card and recipissé.
Fantastic, a new digital system that requires more human staff, well thats a success

Playing a straight bat, why would a new, arguably more comprehensive, process not require more staff? It’s doing a new thing, not digitising an old thing.
Sounds like Brexit ! Much more staff, much more paperwork. It’s a new thing - actually it was an old thing, brought back.

It struck me, as my wife got quizzed leaving Ouistreham about her Schengen comings and goings (we’re beginning to think that the glitch coming back through Sangatte in May might just have been her passport, not both of ours) that there is a significant bit of missed functionality in the system. Mainly an “espace client” where you could check when the system thinks you entered and exited together with a chance to request a review if not accurate.

As a security / police system I presume it is exempt from data protection regs? - i.e the right to request your data…

Well, arguably, I took a similar approach to Brexit, assessed that it would be a shit show and voted against it. Though, to be fair, the resource implications were a long way down the list of reasons to vote against it.
I recall the resource implications were quite high on the argument list - on one side the 350mill for the NHS on the side. of the bus, and the drain on GDP / growth on the other. And it’s the lack of growth argument which has indeed turned out to be true. 4 -8% off GDP?
Because UK voters won’t vote for proper taxation to fund their public services the net result is a worse health service, worse other services etc. I’m not sure quite where I am on the grief process - depression / anger / futility - but getting that nice shiny CDS is certainly a good pick me up!
BTW, did you get a permanent 10 year card from the off, or was it a 5 year one?

I think that this hits the nail on the head. We (the UK) want an EU style social system (NHS, good pensions, good social provision for those who cannot work) but want to pay US tax rates for it (~25-26% tax-to-GDP ratio vs UK ratio of ~36% and France’s at 43.5 (sources - Google’s AI summary so worth every penny I paid) )
But no politician will face up to having that conversation with the public because hard and potentially unpopular choices need to be made.
A lot of the time I wish politicians would treat us like adults (then I remember most adults are not actually mature enough to be treated as adults).

I just got my 5 year card in December.
So, it turns out that there sort-of is a way of checking your record. though it only gives you the number of days remaining at the start and finish of a single planned stay.
The only thing that you could really do is then compare the time remaining with your own records and see if the two match.
If you wish to correct an error you then have to “contact the data protection authorities in the last Schengen country where you entered or exited” and ask for the record to be corrected.
