Films watched Several Times

Which one?

The Pirates of Penzance with Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline - who sings himself. Also A Fish Called Wanda. I like fun movies - I watched Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and that was it for any movie that wasn’t light and fun….except for Harry Potter and LOTR. Oh, That Thing You Do - I would watch that any time.

And also Cape Fear. I think I preferred the second one.

Italian Job (original), Alfie (love the pub riot scene with Queenie Watts continueing to sing while dodging all the missiles  ), already mentioned,

This morning horribly early, we went down to Montauban for my wife’s post-cataract review. Returning home, had lunch at the location where much of the action occurred in one of our favourite feel good films, the market square at Saint Antonin-Noble-Val (The Hundred Foot Journey).

Today, we were sat maybe one table to the left of Helen Mirren and discussed how little needed to be done to the ‘unspoilt’ square to make it seem so archetypally ‘French’ for the movie.

Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality posited that through our over-consumption of media we were no longer able to look directly at the world, but instead interpreted it by comparing it to films. The classic example of this (long after Baudrillard posited it) was when witnesses of the Twin Towers’ destruction, described it as ‘being like a disaster movie.’

So we had a pleasant hour or so in the sun (me with very good local IPA) discussing whether or not it was still possible to see our location without reference to the film scenes, and to looking at ourselves looking at ourselves ‘being in France’ despite my wife having know this place on and off in other contexts for about forty years.

Returning to reality, I posted about a year ago how I’d gone there to buy another indigo dyed shirt, but had been unable to buy a decent loaf in this archetypal, ‘unspoilt’ French village. This time the shirt shop was closed - and we didn’t even bother looking for bread.

However, Gigi found a larger than usual chestnut, which is now a new toy…

Hang on, let me think about it.

On the off-chance that was a serious question, the version involving my fellow countryman. There was also a TV series involving a detective and what looks like the same ‘earth’ as in Bladerunner that was also called Recall or Rekall. I have that saved, but it’s only 360P or 480P and as such is very disappointing for the low quality, even though the stories are good.

The is only one Total Recall. It’s got a big Austrian bloke in it.

When I feel the need for a cheer up I watch an Abba movie and sing along. Loud! May upset the neighbours a bit but at least I get happy.

A lot of the filming was done in the village where we used to live, Carlus, in the Tarn. The village was virtually cut off for weeks. It was fascinating to see a film set erected but impossible to see any of the filming as it was always done on the set and never “in public” so to speak.

Gosh I havent seen either of them. I’ll make a point of watching when they come up again or - dare I say it - rent a copy!

I think not:

Total Recall 1990

Total Recall 2012

I never understand why perfectly good films are remade.

Sad but all the disaster movies especially Armageddon, Dantés Peak, Deep Impact, 2012 etc. Syfy all the way apart from some of the good old westerns and war films. Tried to watch a Carry On film the other day but sadly found it no longer funny, must be an age thing. Anything with Bruce Willis in it too especially the Red films.

Midnight Cowboy, High Noon, Casablanca, The Green Mile and quite a few others.

Yes I forgot to mention Holy Grail and Life of Brian. I don;t care much for Meaning of Life.

Yes that one is underrated - I like its clever 30s pastiche visual style.

[ nerd mode on ] Total Recall was based on a Philip K Dick short story (“We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” - clunky title). Blade Runner was also a Philip K Dick adaptation (from “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” - better!) [ nerd mode off ]

We like a good disaster film, some of them can be unbelievably silly, especially the really low budget ones they can be hilarious

Especially the Italian job which was just terrible

In my universe, there is only one Total Recall, one Italian Job and only 3 Star Wars movies, Episodes 4, 5 and 6.

Yes those are on every day on one of my TV channels. The main characters are always sat in some sort of office trying to save the world, hence the cheap production. Battleship is one example ..
