Fair point, I missed that the explanation was already covered earlier in the thread. I’ll reread the previous replies more carefully. Thanks for pointing it out ![]()
Making profit is all about the price you bought at.
We bought a house through a local auction, did very little to it (the work we did we did ourselves) and made a very good profit selling it 2yrs later on the open market. As a rule it is harder to make money renovating in France but buy the right property in the right location at the right price and yes you can make money.
A lot of people confuse refurbing a house to make a home rather than doing what is necessary to make a profit assuming of course you want to, if you can differentiate between making profit from the renovation then the same rules in principle apply whether you are in the UK or France. Sure there are taxes but there are taxes everywhere and just consider them before you buy.
Right house in the right place at the right time.
And the work that needs doing to be able to sell it on at a higher value. If merely decorative so you can do it yourself as you did then I agree a profit is likely. Once you get into full renovation then less likely.
We are selling and are pleased that we will get, almost to the centime, the amount we paid plus cost of the main renovation. And have had a nice home to live in for 20 years.
Indeed - plus the fact that house price inflation is much more of a thing in the UK than in France, so the cost of renovations (whether done purely for “flipping” the house or for your own comfort) are much more likely to be covered by the rise in the home’s value in the UK than in l’Hexagone.
