Our favourite french author after Simenon is Jean Giono. All his books are set in/near Provence. Always looking out for new European writers so will look forward to trying some of the ones mentioned above

He counts as a classic. All the writers I mentioned were born after he died.
Then Simenon must be a ‘classic’ writer?

I’ve just read ‘Meurtre en Montmorillonnais’ by Christine Ribardière. It is, as the name suggests, a murder mystery/procedural novel.
I picked it up because the cover photo looked familiar - it turns out that the novel starts with a murder in which the corpse is found within a couple of hundred metres of our house.
It’s an easy read and quite entertaining.
