Full Self Driving in France, very soon…

Tesla cars are only level 2. That’s mainly because Tesla didn’t fit lidar sensors and relies on cameras only. They’re very unlikely to get higher than that. Others who do use lidar are at level 4 such as Waymo, Baidu and Chrysler. They are mainly intended for self driving taxis as that’s where the real money is for self driving at the moment. They will in the near future be used on consumer cars and then we will have proper self driving.

This is exactly what I’ve been trying to point out. And current Tesla’s will never be able to do autonomous driving, just partial driver automation.

These days I can’t think of things giving me least pleasure. Certainly in London you drive out and can easily get clobbered for time of day access past a school, or any one of a daft money raising ideas. Then possibly clobbered for exceeding 20mph. The issue of actually being able to park and not find there is a ticket that despite reading the display notice there is a sub section. Hopefully France never gets like that.

BTW it’s not only Musk, various levels of autonomous driving on other vehicles. Personally I long for the day I can climb in the back and the machine will take me to the destination.

Hmm, not so sure with Waymo fully autonomous taxis operating in London.

Also I saw that Heidi Alexander ran into a pot hole in Oxford putting her car out of action. True karma (Carma) for the minister of transport.

Yes, I would love to have a car with level 4 (or 5 :open_mouth:) autonomous driving. It would be very liberating and remove what I find a mind numbing chore. Would probably only use it for longer journeys though, say more than an hour.

At least I could sack my chauffeur

I think the mariner was possibly referring to the ‘very soon’ with respect to commercial cars.

Yes perhaps some hyperbole or incorrect wording.

But the main point of the post was to point out that the Netherlands have certified Tesla’s “FSD” and that it should be across most of the EU very soon.

FSD will allow you to get in a car and drive you somewhere with very little or no intervention from the driver, although that it has to supervised.

The data that is currently available shows it is much safer than humans when it comes to the prevention of serious or fatal accidents.

I hope my clarification satisfies the very pedantic people, and the ones who just guess, presume or having a mystic feeling that they are better than what any data shows.

I want the personal jet pack I was promised by Raymond Baxter on Tomorrow’s World in 1975.

But I live in the depths of the countryside and have a paralysed foot, so although I can walk, not for miles, enough for the dog.! I love my autimatic, the sense of freedom, as I drive through the lovely countryside…after 20 years of London I doubt if I shall see the city again; I feel I would have a sensation of lack of control, of a burst of acceleration when needed…I’ve always oved cars and when I was young had the pleasure of owning an Armstrong Siddley Hurricane and drove her over the Little St Bernard pass. I expect these vehicles will be wonderful in a town or city but I suppose I’m a bit of a romantic petrol head and anyway cant get out a great deal because of the cost of the petrol! Life will be very different, and I should take a more positive attitude I’m sure, with the filthy water and the breakdown of ocean currents; little electric buggys I imagine and very useful too. At least the sun is out. With best wishes…

I agree with the Musk thing , but I’ve never found driving a pleasure.

I think it depends, to a certain extent, what you are driving

I can only say I drive to get from A to B. I have never in my life just ‘gone for a drive’ purely for the experience of driving. I’ll admit that a comfortable car makes it less of a chore but I love the ‘idea’ of self-driving cars. The fact that it must be profitable makes me wary. Safety will not be a priority if it affects the bottom line. (see ‘secrecy surrounding data from Teslas involved in accidents’ for example)
