Getting them to sprout, it gives them a head start. Not really necessary but can shorten harvest times.
I always take the seed potatoes out of the net bags, otherwise the shoots can get trapped in the nets and come off
I do too.
Looking great! I’m a bit confused about you setup. Is it under cover
Must get potting on, nearly lost some seedlings in trays to the hot sun this week!
Oh and is that chard from last year?
Yes under cover of the house, they’re in the cellar. Now lettuce in individual pots going outside during the day to harden off.
Yes all from last year’s sowings / plantings. Here’s what we have left
Kale, broccoli, garlic, parsley, chard, leeks, lettuce, spinach, parsnips, carrots, Jerusalem artichoke Brussels sprouts perpetual onions, I sown a few years ago and we harvest the leaves and put in salads.
Planted/ sown last autumn for harvest this year, onions, garlic, Spring onions.
Sown / planted this year and now either in the cellar or house, onions, beetroot, kohlrabi, lettuce, sweet potatoes, basil, parsley.
I’ll be directly sowing my peas this morning and maybe some carrots too.
All this gardening keeps me out of mischief
And the light is what?
A couple of led strip lights
Wow - is that a wide enough spectrum?
Just cheap led strips iirc +/- 6000k as only needed for green growth. Expensive grow lights are a money making con.
Interesting! Could you show me a photo of your set up if you have time? We live in a barn with not enough windows! What temperature is your cellar?
Will do, as you’ll see it’s a very basic setup definitely work in progress a couple of trestles and a couple of strip lights.
Busy morning in the garden. Planted parsley and first early potatoes in containers, sown multi sown turnips in pots , carrots using the egg box method, parsnips.
My first ever bonfire, in the garden today. It burned quite a lot of old prunings and deadwood. Even though it was a pig to get going. (SuePJ’s firelighter tip helped.) Nothing was in danger, and the smoke didn’t blow towards the neighbours and didn’t reach the road either. A result, for my first time ever. I’ve got some branches left of a wood type that didn’t seem to want to burn. So I may have another go next weekend if the wind is blowing again in the right direction, perhaps with a few careful drops of accelerant.
Other than that, most of it burnt up except I now have quite a lot of white powder/ash on the ground. Is it potash? Is it any use for anything?
Burning is not allowed now in our area… not until the autumn I think…
