True, but haven’t seen a single ladybird either. And I can’t find a (empty) spray bottle , so maybe the ladybirds have a chance ![]()
It’s the aphids that are doing that. ![]()
Thanks @SuePJ If you hadn’t already guessed, I’m new to all this green finger stuff
We’ve noticed patches of our “lawn” where the grass is going gradually yellow at the top. It looks like it may be rust, probably caused by the weather. I’m wondering whether to just leave it or try some sort of fungicide. Any ideas gratefully received!
Nettle purin!
This isn’t a question but a recommendation, I got 3 new point of lay pullets, v sweet and nice which is a good sign, last week from an independent family business garden centre in Mussidan (24) called Jardinerie Dupontheil, their plants looked lovely too. I do think SIFBs need support ![]()
Thanks Jane. I think I’ve seen that in our farmers store.
Bucket (with so e sort of top) pack very full with nettle tops. Add water. Leave for 2 weeks. Strain. And you have saved yourself €10.
Leave it out of sun away from house as it does stink!
I make purin d’orties with all the leaves and stalks but keep the top 4 or so leaves for stewing in butter and eating telles quelles or as soup (just melt the nettles with an onion, add stock pepper and nutmeg, whizz, let a potato disintegrate in it and serve with a dollop of crème fraîche).
When I first got here I used them a lot, always very patient with my newbie garden questions! Your chooks were so cheap compared to Jardiland too!
I’ve got that too, not on the nicer grass but on an awful new sort with really tough roots that arrived last year and is spreading everywhere!
I’m just cleaning up my garlic to move inside to finish curing and found tji. Insect? Or something more sinister? Will obviously go in the eat first pile!
I don’t think I have ever seen nettles growing around here. They just don’t ! We are on Jurassic limestone, very deep, where all rainwater quickly disappears. Not many plants really like to grow here. The soil is full of stones. But we have found certain plants that are happy. I’ll keep my eyes open for nettles when out and about.
We are in the Jura on jurassic limestone!! And have loads. Look along road verges if can’t see anywhere else as they like nitrogen so are often a sign of human activity (ie people peeing…
) but also horses.
I’m about to try this for a carrot crop after the peas…Do you poke a hole in each “egg”?
Yes, I find it better to place the egg boxes first then water them to make them softish then use sécateurs or scissors to cut / poke a hole.
Bulb mites?
I’ve never seen this system! I tried carrots once and it was such a disaster I’ve never tried again!!
I’m going to pull out my calabrese. Such a disaster, grew so well then all bolted! They’ve only been in maybe 6 weeks. I know you are supposed to rotate but I’m thinking of putting my curly kale in there on the basis that the broccoli was in for such s short time. Do you think it will be OK?
Excellent advice, thankyou Jane !
