Gardening questions and chat!

Thanks! I’m so pleased, I had nearly 2 kg from the 2 plants I dug up a month or so ago as well, so actually I could have maybe got them all then and had the same result!? I’m going to pot up all the little bits and will report in the spring

I don’t think my last try at cauliflowers was bugs they were just crap!

Definitely pests - the white bits are always riddled with black bits, hence my thought abour enviromesh…

That’s what we did last year as it is incredibly wet here. However, we garden on a slope so the drainage is quite good, depending where we plant. I’ll have a think about this year’s plot arrangement as we always rotate.

You inspired me to get my self together with my composting as one bin is obviously not enough and I’ve not been taking much care!!

Yesterday we spent the morning cleaning our neighbours / woodman’s wood area and got a full big trailer of bark ect so our chickens now have a glorious run with inches of wood over it, it will eventually break down and used as compost.

He also had some pallets he was going to burn. 4 of them are heavy hard wood so I’ve just made a simple bin, nothing like yours, just tied together with bailing twine, I’ll replace with wire when we get some. I lined the bottom with a layer of bark then started layering the stuff out of the old compot bin with the barrow of sawdust and chicken poo I just cleaned out of the chook house. Much to my delight when I got 1/2 way down there was compost! Full of worms and grubs. I have given it a good stir as it was quite packed in some bits and chucked any sticks ect in the new one. I couldn’t get right to the bottom as it seemed hard but I’ll have another go tomorrow when I’m fresh and see if I can find our proper compost aerating tool.

I also got 4 smaller pallets from Alain and I’m going to set them up in the chooks run. I’ve been doing ’ henposting’ for over a year just making a pile and to be fair I got barrows of compost out in the spring but I think it may work better if its more contained as it just goes everywhere!

He had already tidied most of his wood area and just got rid of it all in the woods. Next year he’ll call us so we should have even more wood bark ect. Win for him as its a lot of work, win for us as we could never afford to buy wood chips to make the girls run nicer :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks for inspiring me to do some jobs I’ve been wanting to for years @Wozza :+1:

Covers keep them warm but have to check that not too dry.

I think this is a big issue, as you can see the nice’ish compost is still quite dry, which considering it rained pretty much all September and October that isn’t great. Looks like we haverain due in the next week or so. I was thinking for the new bin I would water it tomorrow to try to get it going. I have a box of compost accelirair somewhere, is that worth adding? I’ve also asked hubby to pee in there just now. He doesn’t seem convinced, even though I offered to put a breeze block to stand on :rofl:

On the contrary, it’s composted and has good drainage, but retains moisture, not soggy. Nice looking compost you have there. :+1:
Your 4 pallets composter will do just the trick, If I Wozza you :upside_down_face: I’d line the insides with cardboard, just sheets of cardboard round the sides as you build up the composting matter, this will help to retain heat especially when young & green. I do have lids on my composters. Glad I’ve inspired you & thank you for writing so

Nah, dont water it’s going to rain soon. If you want to get it started get the lawn mower out cut some grass & add to the bin with brown matter you can add the chicken poop too, but need more brown matter easy to find this time of year with the plants & flowers dying off.
Compost accelerator never used it.
Again, well done!

It must be 20c today. I’m spending my afternoon tidying up the veg patch (filling my compost bin @Wozza :rofl:)l

I’ve measured up for my 6 cauliflowers so after I collect the small I’ll pop them in and at least the garlics if not onions and shallots. Perhaps I should get dh to install spotlights for me down there :rofl::rofl:

OK now I believe you🤣. I just got out 6 trowels full to put under the caulis and as soon as I did I could see how lovely, black and crumbly it is, and full of worms in every scoop, I tried to pick them out but they were too many!

Cauliflowers in, 10 lettuces in (1 was missing, 1 got decapitated!) and 33 garlics! More tomorrow! Getting dark and have spotted one of my poor girls has what I think is an infected vent so need to go and find out what the treatment is,!

All the garlic in, as well as the shallots. I found a bit of land I’d covered at the back of the hoop house so took off the black plastic, loosened the soil, flattened it and am dumping some compost, bagged compost and s bit of manure and will get as many onions in as I can! Have 2 1/2 kg bags, 1 red , 1 white, there must be hundreds! Right back to it!!

Keep up the good work, a half-empty compost bin is not a happy bunny.
Today, I’ve started building a new, now affectionately known as an artistic compostier Mk1 V2 (© @DrMarkH). Photos to follow next weekend.

Might this present a solution for those with land in need of trimming?

They might not have been ‘dumped’ - could be ‘mentally disturbed’ French liberal goats fleeing a Trumpian goat keeper…

I’d love that but Kent’s a bit far :rofl::rofl:

Cold but a lovely sunny afternoon so I went out to prep some more space for onions. I then remembered we have hundreds of tiles we bought from LBC. On the ad they looked much more terracotta but we didn’t like them. We bought them anyway as it was a lovely lady who’d just lost her husband, soppy dags that we are :rofl:. The bed I wanted to prep is too wide and I knew I needed a path, particularly for dh who doesn’t seem to get ‘don’t walk on the soil, we are doing no dig!’. Anyway I had the brilliant idea of using said ugly tiles as paths and I’m thrilled!!!

And they don’t look as bad as I remember!
