First strawberry :strawberry: not grown undercover

Not having a good start to the season. We have an unusual plague of slugs. All my recently planted tomato plants have been flattened by a hailstorm. Now part of my potager has been swallowed by a sinkhole taking my recently nurtured butternut squash with it.

I took up gardening to relieve stress !!!

Oh that’s tough. A sinkhole sounds dramatic! Bon courage.

Oh no!!! Fingers crossed things improve! The first year I had a garden I was super late getting stuff in ( like June / July) and it all caught up so don’t worry too much.

Why aren’t m tomato seedlings growing? They all popped up nicely, I potted then in and … Nothing. Just sat there being small. Any ideas???

Old well? If not worrying. Any old mines or mushroom cellars in the area.

Heat lack of ???

No defiantly not. Previous owner said it was a well but it must be bottomless bacause he had to keep putting more rocks down it.

Being a spéléologue in my youth I recognised it as a natural swallet to a cave system below. I can trace the path of the cave through the village from the change in surface features.

Bizzarly, the most famous spéléologue in French history is interred in our local cemetery.

Above or below ground?

Best to wait before planting certain bits and bobs… ???

They shoot up suddenly as soon as they get a solid bout of water then sun

Maybe, although they are on a warm east facing terrace.

I’m hoping so!

I’ve put some back on the heat mat and I’ve bought lidl 6x marmande and 6 x heirloom mix that I’ve had success with before as back up!

your veg garden reminds me of Bob Flowerdew of Gardeners World fame in the 90’s

Are you sure you are not mistaking me for someone else? I think my potager owes more to Steptoe and sons than Bob Flowerdew

I am pretty sure he used old tires as planters, chest freezer for a waterbutt…
I am not too familiar with steptoe& son but will check YT …

Thanks for that Bettina. I get quite a few derisory remarks round here. Next time I will refer them to Mr Flowerdew.
