What went wrong?
I made the mistake of trying it
Agree. Unless one’s a great Indian chef I find it unpalatable.
I agree too…can be a bit slimy if you don’t know what you are up too but I’m a big fan of Sindhi Bhindi, but you need to love spice and all things crispy ![]()
It’s also considered by many cooks to be an essential part of a Cajun gumbo.
I agree about okra. I feel it must be something that you’re brought up with to appreciate.
Have tried cooking it but wasn’t a good result.
gooseberry - one of my favourite fruits but I haven’t had any since coming to France. I’m confused though - because when I look on google translate it comes out as groseille - which, to me, is also currant. So with regards to jam sold in the supermarkets, is groseille (red) currant or gooseberry.
Groseilles à maquereau are gooseberries. Groseilles are redcurrants. Groseilles à maquereau are a bit unusual, you don’t see them so often or things made of them, could be because they are ugly.
Thank you vero ![]()
Not dissing gooseberries obviously but redcurrants look like perfect little jewels and white ones like opals and gooseberries are just sludgy, even if gooseberry fool is lovely. I see you can get red/purple ones, new to me!
I really miss gooseberries. My mother made gooseberry fool with Birds custard and cream, it was delicious.
The only time I saw fresh gooseberries was at Grand Frais once but they were expensive and looked tired.
I’ve ordered and received some gooseberry plants. They are sitting in the shade of a tree, being watered every day, as I wait for the heatwave to pass to get out to plant them. Rain forecast for tomorrow and Monday should soften the ground and made planting easier - it’s like concrete at the moment.
We bought cutting of gooseberries with us, they take very easily and have had a good crop from 3 pots. Once we have deal with the garden ofherwise known as concrete we will create a better area cor them. And for our other fruit. Our absolute favorite js a gooseberry x cassis and I think everyone shoukd have one!
Le caseillier ou casseillier est un arbrisseau issu du croisement dans les années 80 en Allemagne entre un cassissier et un groseillier à maquereau.
I had one of those and the hens loved the fruit very sweet to see them hopping up to get one, unfortunately the deer loved the plant itself and ate it to death.
Gooseberries I like them, I have one bush that’s enough for us and I give some to a neighbour that like me enjoy eating tart fruit. We usually eat them in crumbles.
Years ago I made wine with them it turned out really well tasted like a German hock.
Same thing usually happens to ours, but this year the blossom survived intact and we have a huge crop.
But not big jam fans so am going to dry most of our crop and maybe make some apricot harissa with the rest.
Hi Wozza
We had quite a lot of gooseberries on the bush. Still small so left them to grow on and the blackbirds decided they were just right for them!
Next year I shall be quicker!
