What brand? I’ve tried GF pastry before from Leclerc and it was like cardboard.
Their own.
Thanks Tory, I’ll look out for it.
I am intolerant to wheat, not just gluten.
We like the chickpea flour, it is quite nutty tasting.
I’ve got a bag of that but not used it yet. What do you make with it Jane?
I make a quiche.
I’ve just found this thread and hope it’s OK to join in.
I also have a gluten intolerance, I think it’s just wheat. It seems to have become easier here to buy gluten-free over the years, except decent bread maybe and at the moment, muesli/granola that doesn’t have wheat in it. The bought breads I’ve tried seem to be very low fibre which I don’t like. We manage OK eating out and mainly people in restaurants are quite helpful.
There is one new issue, I don’t know if you lovely people can help with it. Today is the second time I’ve been to Carrefour in Narbonne and they didn’t have any oatcakes. Not even a space where they should have been, so I wonder if they aren’t going to sell them any more.
Does anyone else buy oatcakes? I know I could make them but my last batch were a disaster, plus oatmeal isn’t easy to get hold of.
@kirsteastevenson, you’re my hero, thank you so much! I read your post from a couple of years ago about the Trading Post, who I’d never heard of, and they’re still going. Their website looks interesting.
I see they do Doves Farm gluten-free brown flour that I think we used to buy in the UK. Oh was pretty good at making bread and is keen to start again. He’ll be pleased to see that they do Thatchers Gold cider as well, that was his favourite.
I’ve never bought or looked for them. I’m presuming GF? In the British section? I’ll look out for them as that would be great to have another option for lunches for dh.
A few things we do / found since I started this thread:
- oats - you have to be careful as even though they are just oats some farms may do wheat then oats in the machines meaning they are contaminated. Aldi organic ones are clean and best value.
- Lidl do rice and corn crackers that are gf and the corn ones are quite tasty unlike the rice ones which are polystyrene like

- Becky Excell has awesome recipes both online and her books. Dh makes a batch of 4 pizza bases which he can also use as flatbread.
Thank you for that, toryroo. I hope your OH is feeling better than he was.
I can cope with traces of wheat gluten. I think it’s Nairn’s oatcakes that spell out exactly what they process in their factory.
I got a bit fed up with expanded polystyrene and corn crackers but might try the corn ones again. At the moment I’m buying Le Pain des Fleurs gf crispbreads in either Carrefour or Biocoop who have more flavours. They’re good with sweet or savoury.
I’ve never bought or looked for them. I’m presuming GF?
If you mean Grand Frais, in Narbonne they have virtually nothing from the UK. I’ve only seen Cheddar and very occasionally Stilton.
Oatcakes are biscuit texture, not cakey. They’re nice with cheese, tapenade and other savouries.
You can get oatcakes in both Intermarchés in Bergerac and probably Leclerc as well.
The bigger Intermarchés have a decent range of GF products and a few British bits down here in 47 (at eye-watering expense).
I’m putting together a Christmas order for The Trading Post and I have one question please.
For the Aude, delivery/pick up is in Carcassonne or Limoux at their meeting point, often in a car park. It sounds a bit cloak and dagger and I just wondered if anyone else has done that in another département?
Apologies for not replying sooner, I’ve only just seen this! Glad it’s of some use to you, and you’ve reminded me that I must do my order this weekend to pick up middle of next week!
To answer
I guess I’m just used to it! Most of these sorts of things do car park pickup, there’s a British food store in Gueret which does the same thing, and back in the day one of the UK to France delivery companies (you could order from UK shops that wouldn’t deliver here and they’d take receipt then bring it across) did a regular monthly pickup in a local car park. With Trading Post the Nov one tends to be extremely busy here so a car park is very handy as there’s usually quite a queue that forms, but often there may only be two or three people waiting so the driver is in and out to the next point within ten minutes.
I’ve found that Trading Post are getting a little less reliable with stock availability than when I wrote that, more things are out of stock, and the wait to get them back in is longer. I suspect with Doves Farm for example they have a reasonably high MOQ so they have to wait until quite a bit is low/out until they can order more, but I have no complaints about them really (ignoring that some of the prices make me wince!)
Thank you for the reassurance, I appreciate it.
Good luck with your Xmas order.
By the way, @toryroo, would you be interested in a gf recipe for an oaty fruit crumble or a savoury oaty cheesy one with root veg? OH makes both quite well and they taste really good.
Yes please!
I dug out the cookbook with the fruity crumble earlier, I’ll type out the recipe tomorrow, hopefully.
And I’ll ask OH to let me have his online recipe.
