Have you got comfort features?

Coincidentally, the family ended up in Begur on Sunday for lunch. I only found out last night when I had to listen to the round up of their day out with the other grandparents.

It’s also interesting to look at some old maps (if one can) and note where properties and roads/chemins used to be and where they are nowadays.

There’s a road which now passes in front of our home, but it didn’t exist until fairly recent times (200 years?). Our home also has a stone marked 1845 over the door. But that does not give the age of the property, merely when the major work was done to join one small building (circa 1300) with another nearby building (c1500 )to make one longish property in the middle of the terrain.

Didn’t it used to be the case in the Greek system whereby if you put a roof on your house it was subject to taxes and so they remained flat roofs? Seem to remember it from an article somewhere long ago.

I had understood that if the building was unfinished then it was subject to a lower rate of tax, but it might vary by area? That was why they always seemed to have rebar sticking out of the structure.

The unfinished building tax dodge used to be a thing but has not been the case for many years.

The main reason why some Greek properties remain unfinished, or only a single storey is lack of money - Greeks start on building a family home but then don’t have the money to complete it - it’s a long term project that is resumed when they have the funds.

Or in the case of commercial developments the 2008 crash and subsequent economic problems in Greece meant the developers went bust!

They’re caught amphitheatres :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

The house in which I spent my childhood had an air raid shelter in the back yard -
it had a very substantial roof.

So did ours in Nottingham, with a very thick concrete roof and then a 2 foot layer of soil on top with flowers, quite a feature. :joy:

Rather like the “Snail” thread, this title makes me smile …

At my age I think it’s fair to say that I have got “comfort features” and laughter lines as well
