I would like to put some of my free time to benevolent use and volunteer for a local or national org.
My benevolent background in the States includes work with animal rescue, both small animals and horses.
However, when I checked with the local SPA, they weren’t interested in my service without a B2 certification in French.
I haven’t yet applied, but from talking to locals, I was told that Banque Alimentaire would likely say the same.
Can anyone recommend an org that would accept assistance from an anglophone like myself? I can understand most basic, slowly spoken French, read somewhere between B1-B2, but my spontaneous oral expression is probably still A2, maybe B1 if not so spontaneous.
What!! Were you applying for an admin position . Feeding walking and mucking out doesn’t require many language skills. Try your local Secour populaire, aux secour catholique, Restos du cœur, Croix Rouge, Protection civile, pompiers volontaires. There are plenty of others. I doubt that the resto du cœur will turn down your offer.

That’s what I said! They insisted it was an issue with their assurance.

Maybe an excuse, I have worked with and know many French that haven’t that level especially when written.
I was initially told that as a non-French person, I wouldn’t be covered by the Association’s insurance in order to clear scrub at the local chateau, and therefore couldn’t participate. This was obviously total nonsense, and the position was soon “clarified” when the insurers were challenged by incredulous association officials.

Was exactly my reaction. A friend I rarely see does or did dog walking for the SPA, when I next see her I’ll ask. As Wozza says, sounds crazy to me.
But there are also the dog rescue associations though the ones I am connected to are nowhere near Strasbourg unfortunately. They certainly didn’t want qualifications from me to transport, foster, or, in the case of my current Beauceron, entrust him to me to look after for the rest of his life.

Checking back in after more than a year (mon dieu !) of life changes, two relocations, and such to report that an acquaintance recently put me in touch with her friend who manages the local Resto du Cœur. Despite my limitations with fluidity in oral expression, they were happy to put me to work, both with accepting and inventorying the morning intake and assisting with the afternoon distribution.
Very nice to be helping good people doing good work for what seems like a good organization.
