I'm muting all political threads now

Ultimately, it’s a free world and there will always be those who may feel it’s ok to vocalise without filter.and be controversial. The secret is, and it’s your personal choice, to not let it affect you. Letting it affect you does absolutely no good whatsoever, so why react. Just ignore the posts that you find irrelevant, crass or upsetting in any way. There are plenty of very interesting, pleasant and informative posts to enjoy

It’s a way of venting one’s spleen - far better that then lobbing bricks through neighbours windows :slightly_smiling_face:

I honestly don’t see it that way… it’s not the residents per se who are regarded as heartless scum, it’s just the present bunch of no marks running the country. The right (not politically biased) thinking unfortunate remaining residents are just as horrified about the way things are in the UK and when you are out of the country away from your loved ones, you fear for their safety and well being.

The thing is that there was just enough of a majority who were taken in enough to vote for Brexit and the consequences we have already seen, but the chickens are now coming home to roost for those in UK.

@graham …totally agree, biggest downside of SF is the tendancy for a moan rather than objective criticism supported by facts not social media bile…and the way that some threads go off topic by members, for some inexplicable reason, posting a topic that has no relevance!

Survive France is promoted as having a dinner party atmosphere or on a similar level a few friends chewing the fat over this and that and offering answers to an experience encountered by one friend that can be offered as a solution to another within the group.
Invariably themes wander and in doing so often lead to answers that you didn’t realise you had a question about.
I dont see SF as a council or business meeting with a set agenda but more as the last item on the agenda of Any Other Business which is the joy of SF as there is something new to read and participate in every day

But if you’re reading or referencing an article about access to health care and all of a sudden the thread veers of to a receipt on making blancmange then it can be quite annoying.

Mostly, I think folk try to answer, before digressing… not always, but mostly I reckon.

If the digression itself doesn’t interest me, I scroll on down until the conversation returns to whichever bit of the thread I was interested in… if it doesn’t return, then I move to another Topic.

However, I do find it “annoying” (if that’s the right word) on those occasions when a few folk will continue the digression but in a snarky/nasty manner (seems to be carefully judged so as to not break the dinner party rules). But, totally unnecessary stuff (in my view), which has me heading off and away… and sometimes muting the thread.

Mind you, on a boring day… I do take a peek at muted threads and it’s good to see that some of them do return from the dark side…
EDIT: I enjoy the jokey replies, that’s different.

I tend not to mute Topics now in preference to just marking them from “Tracking” to “Normal”.

I mute as that removes the offending thread from my line of vision.
It’s a last resort if the thread is really getting on my nerves… I see no point in clicking-on just to read new posts which raise my blood pressure… but we each have different ways… fair enough.

human nature being what it is @stella it’s a difficult call. I tried that by muting individuals but ended up, out of curiosity, looking at what they posted anyway.

Or entertaining! I find the segues quite fascinating as how one gets from A to B is often very curious.

But yes factual threads should perhaps remain in topic if they can.

That’s the purpose of the stayontopic optional tag but it must be used with permission and limitedly. Otherwise, unless the OP seeks the correct authority when starting the Topic, the discussion could, rightly, wander of the originally intended path but what would not be right is to allow it to be used willy-nilly since that could diminish its importance.

Except when it’s @Stella and food

Absolutely… food and drink are essential for Man’s survival… and women know what’s best (of course) :+1: :+1:

Too much and I would certainly roll on the floor, perhaps laughing at the same time.

As long as they keep providing it, I’m sure the men won’t complain! :sunglasses:

Back to the slightly political topic of this thread… with a foody twist…
I’m not wanting a political-slanging match… just answers

Can someone tell me how the families are supposed to do this… 'cos I do my best, but I can’t match that.

Frankly I have no idea. It’s a little like being presented with a circle that you’re told is a square - there’s been a fundamental failure in either communication or understanding somewhere along the line, and there’s simply no way to make sense of the ‘facts’ as presented.
