Importing UK car now practically impossible?

The 846a and the quitus fiscale are quite different things, with the former confirming the tax regularisation of a non-EU import and the latter confirming that an EU import is coming into France with TVA paid in the original EU country.

On Thursday I was in the Douane office in Bordeaux (Bassens) and the officer I was dealing with called it a ‘quitus fiscale’, I said i thought i would be receiving an 846a and he told me they were one and the same.

Having received both, I can confirm that they’re different things but then not all vacuum cleaners are made by Hoover.

Are they differently numbered ?

Yes and they look completely different. I’ll see if I can dig them out.

Just for info @PeterJ (and possibly near future need to know), did the douanes accept a sales receipt as the value, or did they make their own valuation up?

Here’s the header from the QF.

I was assisting a friend, he bought the car from his son. We presented a receipt dated in January signed by the son and they accepted it, having inspected the car and confirming the VIN on the vehicle was correct.

Thanks Peter, I thought the worst ie we are already resident in France but purchased a UK car whilst we still had a place in UK last year, forgetting since Brexit we’d have to pay import duties - would mean approx £6K for us.
It will be easier now for us to sell the UK car and purchase a French one, but wondered if there’s anyone out there who may want to do an exchange (if they wish to return to UK for example).
If you know of any sites where a possible exchange could happen, other than Survive France as that’s mostly those who want to stay in France, that would be very helpful.
Thanks

Hello Tanya. Welcome to a place where someone will defo know the answer to whatever you need to know.

I have imported three GB vehicles since Nov 2020. The 1st, being pre-Brexit, I didn’t have to pay anything, just get it tested [Controle Technique] and re-reg. :grinning:

There’s a guy who specialises in doing re-reg. He’s done mine x 2*. The third was never re-reg. I paid the duty  but it went back to the dealer as a dud before re-reg. I could have got the duty back if I’d known then that I should have applied to re-export the vehicle, even tho’ it had never been reg to FR plates. Just in case that situation occurs for you.

Now, post Brexit, import duty is paid to Douanes [Customs]

You’re s’posed to do this when you land but they’re flexible. Within a month is acceptable. Budget on 31%-32% of the value of the vehicle. I paid the duty for the van I imported in Jan, on line. You need to send in a copy of the V5 reg doc and an invoice or whatever that supports the valuation of the vehicle. It was slick, quick and easy. If your V5 has an entry thus

you won’t need the CoC.

Re-reg to FR plates should be done as asap but again, there’s flexiblity. The broker set me up with what they say is the only FR insurance co they know which will cover a GB reg vehicle pre re-reg. I recommend this broker, as many on SF do for all sorts if insurance, from vehicles to health. Contact katherine@fabfrenchinsurance.com

Due to a prolongued faff getting my van to pass the C.T. * I actually ran right up to the last day of the 90 day grace period of the insurance before getting the provisional Carte Grise doc. Even if I’d overrun, katherine@fabfrenchinsurance.com told me she had things in hand with the insurance co and not to panic …

And rather than the 4-6 week wait after submission of application, by some monster miracle Mark submitted my dossier after hours and by lunchtime the next day had my provisional C.G. in his inbox! This even with a C.T. Fail in the dossier, just to get the whole checked out asap!

  • One of the issues in passing the C.T. can be r.h.d. headlights and tail lights. C.T. stations seem to ‘take a view’. The C.T. tester at the first place I went to, where I was renting at the time, passed my Peugeot 307 with its r.h.d. headlights. It passed again at a branch of the same chain - AutoVision - where I live now.

But my Vauxhall Vivaro van [aka Renault Trafic] was failed on headlights. They said “they’re much higher than the 307”

It also failed on having the rear fog lamp on the ‘wrong’ [O.S.] side. Bizarrely [Frenchly] there’s what looks like a fog lamp lens on the other [N.S.] but the bulb holder is blanked off! A replacement LHD lamp cluster was €40 inc p n p and 5 mins to fit. You may find, as I did, that there’s wiring already running to the blanked off ‘lamp’ so the push-fit terminal will run the new bulb and a cable from the original one won’t have to be run across to the new one.

Either way, you’ll end up with rear fogs both sides - much better.

If you need new lights don’t go to your vehicle’s agents. They will quote you telephone numbers for Bosch/Hella glass replacements. There are 3rd party replacements to be had for fractions of the price, unless your vehicle is a bit unusual.

I’ve had replacements for a Renault Master and the Vivaro for <€300/pr inc p n p. They’re plastic lenses but perfectly good. You could buy 3 prs of these for the price of one Bosch lamp. P.M. me if you need info on this.

I think that’s it. Bon courage!
