Internet Speed in Rural France: Why Is My Fibre Connection Still

Does that differ from pressing the button on the side of the Livebox, which then displays upload and download speeds?

Does the Livebox5 do that? I’ve never noticed that and I’m not home to check.

They would probably replace it like that if it broke down, but currently, we can only get a more recent one if we upgrade the contract. Talk about milking it! We were the first in the hamlet to take out a fibre subscription, and now we’re being left behind because we don’t want to pay any more than necessary !

I’ve always had my doubts whether that option shows the true connection speed.

The Livebox 5 is still provided on new contracts at the cheaper levels, so it doesn’t seem unreasonable that they’d replace like for like. You’re not being disadvantaged, merely getting what you pay for.

For xDSL where there is a line speed it should show that - it is also visible on the Livebox web interface.

Actual speed might be less, for a variety of reasons.

FTTH has a ā€œline speedā€ but it is usually higher than your abonnement (and shared) and your actual max speed will be the result of a cap elsewhere in the network.

We have Sosh fibre in rural Cantal, since recently it’s announced to be 1000/800 Mbps. Livebox is version 5, with the ONT built-in, max supported speed is 1000 Mbps.

Just now I tested the speed with the Orange/Sosh app on my iPhone 12, being next to the box.

Satisfactory, I would say. Especially considering the price, 31 €/month.

Ooh, I hadn’t spotted that. I’ve just gone into the app and upgraded from my current 400Mbps up to 1Gbps plus a drop in price from €31 down to €26. Happy days.

I don’t know - ours is a Livebox 6 but next time I’m round at my friend’shouse, I shall look.

I broke down and ordered Starlink. I’ve had it. I get 3 mbps download on a supposed fiber network from Free. It’s ridiculous. I do daytrading and can’t function with their network. It’s retarded. I don’t know why they can’t provide decent speed? Are their fiber optic cable under carrying capacity, are the switch sites and server rooms not air conditioned and with the late heat everything fried or broke down. I don’t know, I don’t care anymore. Forget about them, I’m getting Starlink and if it works I’ll let you all know.

Hi Hpl and welcome to the forum.

Sounds frustrating!

3Mbps on a fibre connection has to be faulty - have you reported it to Free?

Also, is this 3Mbps as measured by a device connected by wired Ethernet to Free’s router (not WiFi or Powerline Ethernet).

Are you saying it’s delayed, or are you using a slur? A random French word in an English paragraph is a little odd, but these things happen when you’re living with another language, and that would obviously be the better option than using hateful terms…

You get 3mbps ? Lucky you. I think it’s 0.5-1mbps here the last time I looked on one of the publicly available tools to see if it was worth it.

Please let us know how Starlink goes.

I will let you know. It’s a huge frustration for me and I imagine others as well. I’m getting the kit in a week or two.

Surely that will be referring to likely ADSL speed over copper, not fibre?

I guess for your understanding I meant it as a slur except in my mind ā€œretardedā€ is not derogatory. I’m older and retarded in my vocabulary means slow or behind. It’s factual without being mean. I hope it didn’t offend you although if you mention it it might have and I apologize not for hurting your feelings.
If you are younger then yes I can see with nowadays’ Democrat fashion guilt and in a progressive manner making people walk on eggshell and making them feel guilty for just breathing or being alive because they create CO2 and have a carbon footprint that should be taxed to high Heaven, you would feel bad about the word ā€œretardedā€. I’m lucky that by being older I wasn’t brainwashed with guilt and observed the Democrat progression on controlling people with guilt from people like the Clintons and Al Gore selling BS in books while they flew to Epstein’s Island to satisfy their lust in a jet that burns cubic yards of jet fuel per hour to get there. They sure were not retarded.

One would assume so. Hpl didn’t say whether it was ā€œfull fibreā€ or xDSL fibre to the cabinet either.

3Mbps on FTTH would be very broken indeed.

I really don’t wish to labour this point but I’m sure to some people calling black people the N word, Chinese people the C word, Pakistani people the P word, gay people the F word etc etc etc, is not derogatory, but if my 96 year old gran can get with the times enough to know not to use these words anymore, then im sure you can too with that particular word. It’s unfortunate that no one in society, be that in your life, or via media, has made you aware that using it has not been acceptable for 40 odd years or more, but I guess not.

You haven’t offended me, don’t worry, I just was a little taken aback. If you would like my previously mentioned gran to educate you on how being old doesn’t mean you have to be ignorant, let me know, but not on Saturday as she’s coming to show her support, and maybe join me in the march as an ally in her wheelchair if she’s feeling strong, at Trans Pride in Brighton.

Im afraid I only scanned the second half of your response as it read like cultist conspiracy gibberish.

That’s horrific for an old DSL connection over the phone lines. The worst FFTH in the world should be at least an order of magnitude faster.

Maybe the Democrats have hobbled his line
