It's not cow burps

We, probably don’t. Our lords and masters on the other hand trade our data, monitor pretty much everything we do on line and will only increase their wealth. With Farcebook etc being a digital ID already in place.

That’s pretty much what I thought so I don’t understand why governments are so keen to accommodate corporations. I guess it’s down to, fear of missing out or being seen as not technologically progressive enough. We all know who will end up paying the real price and it won’t be the mega rich.

I think a lot of the proposals are to do with AI - using ChatGPT etc. and AI image processing etc. involves a lot of number crunching at the other end, which in turn requires arrays of powerful computers and a ton of data storage. That means new processing centres being built and a lot of additional electrical power needed.

The same thing applies with cryptocurrency - that requires big server farms to crunch the numbers ands it uses a lot of power and makes a lot of heat.

I have bored you all with my objections to AI on copyright infringement grounds but its environmental toll is far more important really. These AI guys should be made to pay for new solar and wind generation before they are allowed to shove up new AI data centres. and there should certainly be no government subsidies for building them - they are not going to employ very many people.

I totally agree and not in the least bored by your attitude to AI, I think it’s getting way out of hand already.

I personally would like to see data centers not only Have to make serious contributions to renewable energy projects but they should pay a premium on the energy and water resources they consume. The Uk national grid is already unable to cope due to historic and ongoing, lack of investment. Why anyone with a titter of wit think it’s a good idea is beyond me.

Head of cyber security says cyber attacks are up by 50%. The case against the spying Chinese fell apart as the CPS failed. Head of security service quite annoyed by this but clearly because the UK is bankrolled by the Chinese because the UK cannot balance its books and won’t challenge the Chinese for fear of them turning the money tree off. So digital id would only make the situation worse and many of our leaders don’t bat an eyelid. Apart from a basic Comms network and necessary security from outside attacks we should switch the rest off, go back to paper and pens, let’s watch the super rich data centric companies fail one by one.

Rumours that Rachel from accounts will reduce ISA savings to 10K and encourage more people to gamble on stock market ISA’s so it continues to fuel the rich who can manipulate markets. I don’t agree with gambling.

It’s the rate of temperature rise that is the real issue, not the actual temperature rise itself. Temperatures have risen by the amount they have recently before, and more, but over tens or hundreds of thousand or millions of years. Not over 100 years or so. Very gradual rises can be accommodated usually and species can adapt. Over such a small period of time they cant. That’s what the XKCD comic I posted is saying.

Currently, yes because they can’t adapt and can’t move fast enough. A forest can move but very slowly so if it’s 2-3 degrees over a million years the forest can both adapt and probably migrate and therefore can survive. Over 100 years, forget it. Game over.

Yes that is true - although another difference is that this is man-made climate change not the natural fluctuations of the planet - in other words if left unchecked it may not be reversible. We don’t want to end up with a climate like Venus.

Well, the fact it’s man made only really makes a difference because it’s man that has caused the very rapid change whereas natural changes are mostly very slow. When natural changes occur quickly (in geological time) then that is when mass extinctions can occur.

Thank goodness for that. :joy:

The Scandinavian countries like Denmark build their datacentres so the heat can be used on housing developments. Don’t suppose that cures the summer issues though.

Still need hot water in summer.

Yes however I bet there would be way over the amount required. I get updates on what Denmark are doing eco wise so I try to find out a bit more. Mind you their climate is cooler so maybe it’s not such an issue. We should be doing the same.

Air conditioning? It’s only a matter of time in France before Tempo will be an annual thing and not just winter. Every lotissement these days has air conditioning.

Virtually everything we do that involves the internet these days involves data centres. Banks for example rarely have massive server rooms full of machines anymore, they outsource to AWS or oracle or the like, which in itself has massive implications since they’re owned by Trump pals Bezos and Ellison, Ellison being the person currently reshaping Paramount/ CBS into a right wing mouthpiece.

I don’t fart any more now than I did before I started eating lots of vegetables. Tell them not to eat too much raw stuff. Cooking them makes them easier to digest (same with meat, by the way). It’s the same with whole grains. It takes a while for the body to adjust.

It should be the case that the heat ejected from AC must be collected and stored either in hot water cylinders (old tech) or more preferably heat batteries. The powers at be are so good at stopping us using things they deem not eco, but as they don’t understand the things they rule on are probably a long way off more and larger consumers of electricity.

Estimated 3.6 million pools in France could reduce their power consumption by 90%. They could also reduce water usage by 2/3rds on backwashing and more again by making pool covers mandatory. But No all they do is tax things. Doesn’t cure the actual problem though.

My view of accountancy especially some institutions like banking is they move the cost from their balance sheets to the world’s. They close branches and enjoy additional profits whilst paying out bonuses and they have simply shifted the cost in climate terms to the world’s balance sheet we ultimately all pay for. Looking at the sharp rise in temperature from hairbear’s chart it’s not clever building data centres with all their power needs and energy wasting as it just passes on the problem elsewhere. We managed for hundreds of years we will or should go to that system again.

In order not to confuse, I’m guessing you mean that RED Tempo rate might migrate to all year round due to the rise of air-con/clim power needs.

I can see why you’d think it might, but in summer there is a lot of solar power being produced which goes towards running air-con/clim, & the days are longer meaning that lighting loads are less too.

I suspect that in time all tarifs will become more flexible as the ways we use, produce & store electricity evolve. The upcoming changes to EDF’s HC/HP offering already takes differing demands into account.
