Why not just use the iPlayer app?
Because we have never been able to download it from the French App store. We use NordVPN.
I believe you cannot load UK apps (even with a VPN set to UK)from the French app store. You need to change your country settings in âpreferencesâ to UK.
Emily, Mik:
to get round that create another google id firmly homed in UK and be in that in playstore when you download the app. my id and all my apps has remained firmly uk but I keep a spare google french-homed id for the (very) rare occasion I actually want to download a french app thatâs 5tupidly geo- blocked eg my local supermarket.
this gets over the vpn doesnât work thing on this and doesnât mess up the homing of your main id
I donât think we could change our Apple account to UK as we use it for payments all the time. Not sure how a Google ID would help?
Up to you if you can duplicate the same solution for Apple. This solution definitely works for Android/google. I donât do i-things but would be surprised if it wouldnât work there too.
Just checked and a quick google says you can change location, but only once every 90 days. Since I use my watch to pay all the time I donât think that would work!
Any other Apple users permanently in France out there?
Create a separate French apple account. Then simply switch to that temporarily on your device, download the French only apps, then switch back to your UK apple account. Then you have the French apps plus all your other UK apps. Works for međ
We only have a French Apple account and we use it all the time for payments. If the 90 day thing is correct we couldnât set up and use a UK account without problems. I think the solution is to get a second hand ipad and set it up just for TV with a VPN permanently on. It wonât give us the apps, but the websites are easier to navigate than Amazon Silk.
This.is.why.the.separate.account.solution.on.Android.
No idea if Apple has a barrier to this.
Yes thank you I understand that Karen.
We use Apple Pay all the time and wouldnât want to risk losing the ease of that for the rare occasions we want to watch catch-up. Our satellite signal is fine for live television with recording on Humax.
Iâm a bit confused here as to why were talking about Apple and Google accounts, when a Firestick was mentioned.
Either change your location on your Amazon account or find the APK and sideload using Downloader. I donât have time to write a full step by step but all the key words for Google or YouTube are in the previous sentence.
I think the reference to a Google account is because the Firestick runs Android, which would normally require a Google account to access the Play Store.
Itâs been so long since I used my Firestick that I honestly canât remember if Amazon bypass this requirement or not. I seem to remember something about Amazon having their own equivalent of Googleâs Play Store, but the details are very hazy.
No, it uses Amazonâs own app store, linked to an Amazon account.
Ah, yes, I remember now having to use an app called Downloader and putting in random numbers to download apps I would normally find via the Play Store.
These days I use a Formula Z8 box (still running Android but not locked down) so never use the Firestick.
How do they work Gareth? Do you still need to load the ITVX, IPlayer, Channel 4 apps and a VPN onto it?
Yes, it has access to the Play Store and you can just download the apps like you would on a tablet or phone.
It also comes with its own app for watching live TV. Thereâs a video showing what itâs like here (itâs basically a lot like the EPG from Sky, Virgin, etcâŚ)
But IPTV isnât exactly legal so of course I know nothing about that and couldnât possibly comment on it
You reckon itâs better than the Firestick? To be honest, Iâm not particularly impressed with the Firestick.
The difference is like night and day. I used to fairly regularly have to reboot the Firestick because it had run out of memory or the cache needed clearing. Mine is an old one, so newer ones may be better.
The Formuler box just works. No faffing about needed. In the 2 or 3 years that Iâve had it, I have only once had some strange behaviour⌠which ended up being related to the batteries in the remote needing to be changed. Canât remember the exact details but it was something stupid like the volume buttons would work but the channel changing buttons wouldnât. Replacing the batteries fixed it immediately.
The Forumler is really designed for IPTV though, and it excels at that. If youâre just using the standard apps like iPlayer, ITVx, Channel4, Netflix, etc⌠then you could probably save some money by going for a cheaper version that doesnât cater for IPTV.
Do you think thereâs a difference buying one from Amazon France of Amazon UK? Amazon does mention the UK one is the âUK versionâ, apart from a three pin plug
Could I subscribe to an IPTV provider without having a UK address?
