Was my favourite breakfast before club rides (bicycle) on a Sunday.
Going round then U today on my regular weekly shop I ignored the bread on offer but passed packet of Pita. 6 for 3 euros. I have no idea what it is but thought I would try it, and so I will. At 3 euros it is worth it if only to widen my horizons. ![]()
Pop it in the oven/air fryer to crisp up a bit and warm, split open and put in your favourite protein + some salad/raw veg plus favourite sauce. As @Corona says, bread these days is just a mechanism to transport other food to your mouth.
Yep, sandwiches are a fantastic invention. I’m rather partial to Patapain et all even if the coffee is decidedly average. Or a boulangerie that’s branched out a little and makes them using their own baguette.
Thank you Sue, I’ll do it now with my usual salade inside, you never know, I might like it. ![]()
Don’t get too hooked. Ime, pitas are one of those products that seem to disappear off the shelves for weeks at a time, certainly around my way. I buy them when I see them. And then sometimes I can find them disappointing; dry and falling apart.
On verra. ![]()
Meanwhile, I was somewhat shocked at my bill today, exactly €99.
So for once I studied the the bill and was even more shocked at what I saw.
Gin and Porto round about a tenner each, fair enough, but then I saw the real culprit, Calvados € 22

Thank goodness I don’t buy it often, just one small drop in my petit cafe each evening, phew. ![]()
Delicious warmed through and then humous, tomato and cucumber placed inside. One of my favourites. Don’t eat straight from the pack though, better warmed after being slightly wetted a teeny bit and it will puff up
I used to eat a baguette a day at one point. When I decided I needed to lose a few pounds I cut back. I now buy a wholemeal seeded loaf which I cut into thin slices and put into two plastic zip-lock bags - one with 4 slices in the fridge, the rest in the freezer. I generally have between 2 and 4 slices a day, it’s a flattish loaf so the slices aren’t huge. It keeps perfect fresh and doesn’t get wasted.
I much prefer flat breads, not the commercial ones but ones I make myself. I make a large batch and freeze so I’ve always got some.
Interesting - it’s gone up a lot since I last bought it (at around 17 €) - even at SuperU it’s 20,32 €.
Fair to say that not drinking alcohol keeps our shopping bills down. And maybe not eating meat too. Carrots can be pretty expensive though… ![]()
Whilst here in Cyprus I’m eating pita on a regular basis. Grilled and stuffed with salad, oil and sheftalia (sausage). A lot of red wine, sunshine and music, life is good.
I’ve just discovered the delights of toasted paninis, filled with cheese and ham ![]()
Wow Sue, it was great, though I didn’t make a pocket of it and then stuffed it. Instead I sliced it right through and placed the 2 halves into the AF on grill for 5 minutes or so. Then 2 slices of tomato on each sparingly buttered half, a slim layer of cantal all topped off by several leaves of endives. Mayo, salt and pepper and eaten all with knife and fork.
The crispness of the pita set it all off marvellously. I can’t see the remaining 5 lasting 'till next shopping day.

That really surprised me.
Your belly will thank you also …and show it’s appreciation by growing big and strong. . Actually while a toasted Panini is great on a cold day., the classical ham and cheese or ham and tomato French baguette is my favourite.
Now you (non gender) guys are talking my language. Cheese and ham panini, yumboes. I remember once being at a cafe by the Thames and this young lad had a cheese sandwich; slabs of cheddar on mighty white (I might be making it up), I was envious. I do enjoy a simple cheese sanwich, with mustard of course. I am of simple pleasures.
My daughter makes her own sour dough every few days, the “plant” is called Doughlores and is much better than the supermarket sourdough loaves which they have mostly in the US, their factory sliced breads are tasteless and not nice. She also buys decent flour too which makes a big difference.
If you don’t know the price beforehand, it tends to do that ![]()
