It was a generalisation about YouTube as I hadn’t watched your clip. I don’t follow any YouTube links unless they’re very specifically of interest to me, like your prostate cancer one. Even then, I gave up and went looking for something textual.
Stayed there once and really liked it.
Which is fine but why poor derision upon it when as you say you didn’t watch it. I posted for information not a social comment about YT.
True, but threads do drift, as everyone well knows.
There’s two issues - one is the adulteration of olive oil, clearly that is a problem worthy of discussion.
Then there is the quality of YT “reporting”, indeed presentation generally. Which frequently leaves a lot to be desired.
The problem was starting with a youtube clip, which will likely lose half the audience at the start.
I didn’t pour derision on your link, as such, I was responding to @billybutcher ‘s comments on it, which suggested that it had traits typical of YouTube content. I was sharing my view on YouTube in general.
Despite the breathless delivery a great video. UK olive oil consumption is very low, between 1 and 0.8 litres per capita per year. I’d say most people in the UK know SFA about olive oil and this helps inform them.
Not having ever tasted the brands with the silly Italian sounding names I’d have no problem believing they are rubbish. Regarding the Waitrose high priced product “you’re not buying quality, you are buying a brand name” No shit Sherlock
Just look at the number of shoddily built Tatas (AKA Land-Rover) products on British roads
It should be called Hyacinth Bucket syndrome.
I think those of you who didn’t watch to the end missed out. My usual scepticism leads me believe that Stiftung Warentest, who tested the Aldi and Lidl brands, are more rigorous (and involve less brown envelopes) than anything done in Greece, Spain or Italy, the major producers of olive oil.
We don’t have many olive trees but we lump our “harvest” in with our neighbours and they trot off to the Co-Op moulin and we get back a few litres evert year. It’s nice to have “your own” olive oil. The only draw back is that one has to ensure that one has consumed sufficient of these excellent dark glass, well sealed 75cl storage bottles by harvest time.![]()
Otherwise we tend to buy locally or when we pop over to Italy. The final hints in the video for spotting and selecting good quality oil were very good. I certainly learnt a lot and will be scrutinising the bottles a bit more now.
On Youtube, I get frustrated too when I’m just looking for a quick explanation of something and end up with a video of ten minutes which finally ends in “just press button B”, which could have been said up front. My alter ego always leaves them a rude comment.
I had one the other day on creating a bootable USB of a significantly back level MacOS using Terminal. But I didn’t leave a rude comment this time because the poster had actually added a link to the website where the originator of the technique explained the process. I closed the wittering video and just read the instructions on the site. I guess “content developers” get a better kickback the longer they keep you watching.
I think we should be pleased that the Indians are respecting British tradition.
Priceless ![]()
U2 still have a few of them in storage from their 1994 Zooropa tour. Or at last they did have until their sold their management company building a few years back.
I totally agree!..I go down to Bari when I can to help out on a friend’s and his friend’s etc etc harvest and …what can I say…well, after can’t remember the details but we probably drink as much beer and wine during the harvest than we make in I’ll ![]()
The consumer mag ‘60 Million’ did a very comprehensive test on o/oils recently - lab tests majored over taste tests. Lidl oil came out with very high overall scores.
It’s 80% AI and 20% sponsorship - don’t forget 80% of all statistics are bullshit and the remaining 20% never get questioned.
Just a statement from someone who now lives in Charente and loves nothing more than an open fire. But once upon a time looked after £M+++ of advertising spend. I have 5000 gallons of virgin snake oil for sale if anyone wants a bit of action? ![]()
According to Google, in 2024Italy produced 247,000 to 300,000 tons of olive oil, but exported 344,000 tons as Italian olive oil.
Maybe there’s an olive oil lake in Italy ![]()

It’s a great article isn’t it? and where we live, there was no mining activity but I do know that there’s still a lot of crapolla in the ground.
We get out olives from further south..So far so good and no madness reported ….yet ![]()
Tesco extra virgin is £6.65 a litre ![]()
Good to see that the prices are getting to be more sensible and that supermarkets are passing the benefits on in UK…not quite so the case in NL and France I see.![]()
I thought the title needed some disambiguation - hope @corona doesn’t mind.
