Never thought of a spark plug socket, will have to go digging in the garage. Thanks for the idea AM.
I know what you mean, something’s are better left on the shelf.
A Taylor or a Gibson for school!
When word gets out it’ll be gone in a flash.

David Gilmour, talking to Rick Beato, said “With a Strat, you can tell who’s playing it. A Strat brings out the individual player”. He was not so complimentary about humbucker guitars, tho’ obviously there have been many supreme humbucker players. Mark Knofler, mainly associated with the Strat, came up with the riff for ‘Money For Nothing’ from the sound of his LP.
The Strat and the Tele are also, aside from the music they make, extremely robust, will take a lot of punishment. Look how much effort it took Jeff Beck to break the neck off his Strat in the film ‘Blow Up’.
Jimi Hendrix failed to break his Strat when he went bananas at the RAH in 1969. He ended up using it as a spear, running it through the Marshall stacks of the back line. Then two Met constables escorted him off stage. At that point the whole place erupted in a furious melee. I had a bird’s eye view from a seat in the gods.
I’m envious, I’d have loved going to a Hendrix gig, I think people of our generation were really lucky to be around when ‘stars’ didn’t surround themselves with body guards, most venues weren’t so big you had to look at a screen and ticket prices were affordable, plus if lucky you could bump into some of them by chance. One of the nicest I met was Bob Marley, at the back of Leeds Uni, he chatted to us whilst enjoying a smoke, something he was happy to share, just one stand out memory of my days going to gigs. I was considering going to Leeds to see Bob Dylan shortly but the only tickets left were up in the gods, ok pricing £95, but way too far away for me and pretty much all other UK venues sold out. Maybe next year if he’s still around and I actually remember to check dates.
And some players sound just lke themselves whatever guitar they use. Hendrix, SRV, Clapton all keep their sound with single coil Fender or humbucker Gibson. ![]()
I went to London as a student in 1968. I saw Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention together in the refectory of the LSE for 10/-.
Bands like Tull, The Nice, F.Mac, Rory Gallagher, P.Floyd played the back rooms of pubs [Klook’s Kleek, The Railway, West Hampstead] College refectories or halls [F.Mac - King’s College], small clubs [The Country Club, Haverstock Hill]
Fairport played our collage refectory [Northern Poly] and we chatted afterwards. Richard Thompson played a mate’s Hofner Galaxy
one of the first Strat clones. He commented - politely - that it didn’t compare well with his Strat.
Camden Council put on free concerts every summer w/e at the bandstand on Parliament Hill Fields. F.Mac/P.Floyd/Taste [Gallager] I can recall. Hyde Park free concerts - Blind Faith, The Stones, Floyd launching ‘Atom Heart Mother’ ..
And the 2nd division - Edgar Broughton [Beefheart cover band] Chicken Shack, Steam Hammer, Blodwyn Pig [Mick Abrahams after Tull] The Ansley Dunbar Retaliation [After Mayall’s Bluesbreakers]. London was Rock Central.
Yes, we were very lucky.
Well, if we’re going to start posting pictures? ![]()
This is some of my friends.
These guys also help a little:
I know people like that, if only I’d never had kids ![]()
We had kids, and my wife was kind enough to look after them at times when I played.
What did you say to the bass?
It’s having a private conversation with the fretless 5 string behind.

It has a self-adhesive stripe on the body that just comes where the rack touches the bottom bout, causing it to lift. I flipped it round to stop it peeling any worse.
I used to play guitar (badly) when I was much, much younger. Had a Yamaha SG200 in the early 90s which I’d swapped for a drum kit… much to my mum’s great pleasure. Then at university I got into electronic music and the guitar was promptly sold…
However I’ve recently been thinking of getting one again, so this thread has been a fun read.
I still do that, and I’m much older. ![]()
Do it!
We’ve got a band then
I didn’t have a wife either, just a husband, (sigh, deep deep sigh).
I could squawk out a tune on sax when I was younger, can I join please?
Just a thank you, to you all not just for sharing your knowledge but making it an enjoyable, fun thread. I like musicians , all slightly bonkers but fun.
Do it.
I still do that, and I’m much older.
Moi aussi! I can play “House of the Rising Sun” quite slowly and with occasional pauses to find the next chord. ![]()
