"Laddish behaviour in UK Universities"

It's not just in universities, its everywhere, sex equality seems to have been a victim of its own success!!

I agree Jane it is not a very satisfsfactory state of affairs. I was at a "Russell Group" (a term I despise) University in the late 60's,just at the time when we entered the era of free love/sex aided by the advent of the pill. Men were then in the majority at universities mainly because the entrance system, which was largely based on the ability to remember and manipulate facts and because social norms favoured men (after all girls were only going to get married) and thus less women applied. Women then tended to be regarded as honorary men and we treated each other as equals. Though there were frequent arguments eg when the "Lady's Lounge" in the Student Union was turned into a TV Lounge for all and sundry. Where was a lady to change her stockings in privacy?

Now the examination system favours women with its emphasis on course work and research and women are coming to be the majority in universities. The young men feel threatened and rightly so because universities are about competion. But unfortunately the whole thing has been overshadowed by the hyper- sexualisation of youth society. Look at the videos in my day female stars were mildly erotic now it's full on. Young men are confused and resentful and often find themselves the subject in their institutions of a female hegemony (sorry my Greek doesn't know whether or not you can have a female hegemony) this combined with a culture in which alcohol preloading appears the norm might be considered as contributory to "laddish behaviour". Plus the influence of laddish magazines and free flow porn on the net.
