Latest farmers protest

Not for much longer if the herds are reduced to zero.

Ha! Good work!

I thought about including that video but was too lazy to dig it out!

This gives an indication of why it might be a bad idea - seems that traceability can be ā€œworked aroundā€ by Brazilian rearers.

The Mercosur trade pact now seems to be going ahead.

France voted against it, nevertheless according to The Guardian, ’ Opposition parties in France from the far left and the far right also seized on the deal, agreed in principle on Friday, to try to topple Emmanuel Macron’s government with a motion tabled for a vote of no confidence.’

Never mind the beef, what about the lamb?

And tyres on tractors cost a lot more than fuel on tje roads.

You can guarantee hormone stuffed US beef and who knowd what else, will creep in via Mercosur.

Would have thought Venezuela would be enougj reason for France to get the deal delayed indefinitely as guessing Venezuela is part pf Mercosur one way or another.

I have lived in France since 1999. I have seen many many strikes and demonstrations. French farmers rule the north of France! My neighbours are working 24/ 7 milking their cows and other heavy work that goes on, on the farm. You have no idea obviously! We are in their country after all, so please stop moaning and just get on with it . The English are the worst moaners.

I am a vegetarian, for over 50 years now. Try it! It’s wonderful! I am 82, still cycling and playing rock and roll gigs here

in France. Who needs beef?

I think an average French person would make mincemeat out of a British one when it comes to moaning!

I would contest.

The competition’s stiff, but I think French farmers are more proficient at moaning!

It’s been a cliche that’s been posted on here before, but cliches often reflect reality and this one’s worth repeating -
the French live in Paradise, but pretend they live in Hell.

Why are they attacking their own government who supported them and voted against Mercosur? Also it’s not the peasant farmers’ union that driving the current protests in Paris, but the union of the already rich mega farmers.

It isn’t and its beef production is declining, whilst its beef consumption is increasing, so I don’t think we’ll be seeing much Venezuelan beef-

Hi doc. I have never been into it that deep. I just listen to my farmer neighbours. Who am I to doubt them. They have been mates for 26 years. I see them struggle. Just saying.

Me too.

Small farmers all over the world are struggling.

Yes Jane, and where I live in France, the farmers are giving up milk production for arable farming. So, the hedges and bocages are destroyed, hence no wildlife. Also, vast prairies of mais for biofuels, and rape ( same usage) are in abundant view, allowing screaming winds and torrential rain to wash away all the topsoil. This in turn is full of polluting products that the farmers now have to use for their monocultural pastures.( step forward bloody Monsanto and it’s successors) And so on and so forth. As we all know. Our bodily systems are full of this muck. We have to eat and drink it. There is no escape, unless we grow everything ourselves. I would say that everyone is struggling, healthwise, as long as this state of affairs is allowed to continue.

Our motorway exit is blocked and the farmers have organised to go past my placw on tje big road to the motorway and dump more.

I’m in full support of them.

Very tired of townies that just don’t understand. And @volcanic’s points about the environment are well made.

I have no idea why this rubbish Mercosur thing got signed when I’m sure the EU can and should produce its own food. We owe more support to North Africa than to remote South American countries. (And that’s even though I am not that impressed with the quality of local offerings I am still on the side of farmers.)

Food is only one element of it. According to the news last night, there’s an expectation of selling more cars into the Mercosur bloc plus deals on materials like lithium and a whole bunch of other things.
