Thank you!
At Newhaven Customs have absolutely no interest in your personal items that you are taking abroad for your own use (moving house). However, at Dieppe you should have all the necessary paperwork (I did and it was a relatively quick passage through).
Three copies of the inventory of everything you are or will be bringing into France. I have no idea why they want three copies as the lady Douanier looked at one and gave them all back to me.
An attestation that you won’t sell any of it for at least one year.
Your visa. I can’t remember if they wanted proof of somewhere to live as it is a requirement for the visa (VLS-TS), along with medical insurance cover for the period of the visa. Apply for your Carte Vitale as soon as possible once you are in settled France.
I haven’t noticed the dynamic pricing on DFDS; but I’ve usually got a fixed plan before I book. And Newhaven-Dieppe is usually about 3x cheaper than the Britanny Ferries routes because the port of Dieppe is subsidised by the French, or départemental, government. Only 4 hours, 5 at night, instead of 8; but BF ports will only save you about 1-2 hours’ of driving time on your total route once on this side. Newhaven’s also slightly easier to get to from Yorkshire than Portsmouth.
You should be able to find versions of teh two forms on any good international carrier’s web site.
For various reasons I had to do a lot of Channel hopping recently and so did see that in operation. It is an issue especially if you need to travel urgently, but I agree not really if you can plan ahead.
A few years ago that was true, but last year Brittany dropped some of their prices. Some are now cheaper than DFDS. Well worth checking them all.
Well worth bearing in mind. If you want to sleep on the boat choose one way, if keen to push on, choose t’other route.
When looking at ferry times consider when you be on the road and what traffic you will hit. M25?! Or (another option) from Pompey, M27, A34, Oxford to M1 avoiding the Big Smoke.
Lots of options.
Many thanks gents, priceless tips here
