Thanks very much for all your suggestions. It occurred to me that we haven’t been on that Chalon-sur-Saône, Beaune road for years so we might come back that way for a change.
Incidentally, if anyone’s in Orange and feeling peckish, there’s excellent pizza at Le Saline behind the theatre. It’s a very ordinary looking place which you wouldn’t look at twice but the owner is Sicilian and his pizza dough is lovely and stretchy. We ate on the terrace but there was a constant stream of customers collecting takeaways. After years of getting ripped off in crappy restaurants in Orange this little pizzeria really hit the spot last night.

Many happy memories of Le Vigan! And a brilliant meal somewhere near Gorges de Tarn - can still remember the roquefort tart and it was a long time ago.

But going through Switzerland would add quite a bit extra onto a journey! We always gritted pur teeth and came off the motorway at Bellegarde and crawled into Geneva.
I don’t know the Gorges du Tarn (?) but I’ve just Googled them and they look fabulous. One of my favourite bike rides here is from the village of Alzon down a canyon that gets progressively more arid as you descend. It all looks a bit like Utah and by the time you get to the bottom and the little semi-deserted village of Vissec, you’re half expecting Lee Van Cleef to leap out from behind a rock.
Then back to Le Vigan via the Cirque de Navacelles which seems to be surprisingly little known given how spectacular it is.
Do they still go by calendar year? I think the last time I got one it was at the first service area on the motorway after the border.
