Looking for a Bramley Apple tree

Ok, PM your address & I’ll send you some probably just before / after the New Year. As for post & packaging just just donate a few € to a charity of your choice or to support the site

I have just discovered that the Croquers de Pommes is actually a national body, and the one we know well is just a local group. And they have loads of local groups!

Ours has an orchard of local apple varieties, and do twice yearly grafting sessions with rootstocks of various sizes provided very cheaply, as well as other events. So if you have one in your area it may be well worth getting to know them.

There’s always SF!…..

A bit cheeky I know but following up from a suggestion from a member that people put their hand in their pockets when this site ‘comes through’ for them. As it always does…!

This thread is really what SF is all about!

Pat ..we are just back from our apple tree hunting and picked up 5 different varieties.

I asked about Bramley’s and the man knew of them, did not grow them, but pointed out the Boskoop variety (a.k.a.Belle de Boskoop in France).

It’s a famous Dutch apple (sorry to all those who don’t like Dutch things :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) and the one the dutchies and frenchies use to make apple sauce and the like.

Not as tart as Bramley but sits in between Bramley and Grannies.

Might be worth a shout too!

When we first came to France, we bought many trees including a Bramley apple tree from ‘An English Nursery in France’. The guy’s name was (I think) Mike. Don’t know if he still operates but I did see that there is an entry on Facebook. We don’t subscribe to FB so cant’ give you any more information but he is someone I would definitely recommend. He’s in Jusseau, Chives, Dept 17.

Boskoop are a gazillion times nicer than Granny Smiths and don’t disintegrate to a froth like Bramleys. I love them.

Edited because my tablet is a fan of the greengrocers’ apostrophe, and stuck one on Bramleys, infuriating.

Hi Wozza,

We have an old Bramley apple tree…. Could you please advise/explain what you do to make the ‘scions’ from yours? I would like to do the same.

Hi Mary,
Scions are taken from this years water shoots, cut from the branch. I cut mine to a length about 12-18". I plant them in the ground until March / April.

With last night’s snowfall, perhaps it’s too late to cut the water shoots now? The ground might still be soft enough to get them in the ground….

Don’t trim them if over 18" before you want to graft.

Grafting sounds a bit over my head, but I can cut them and put them in the ground….

Not at all, you have all Winter, if the ground is frozen you can put into a sealed plastic bag & keep in a cool / cold place.

So today we planted some lovely apple trees and some from the Cévennes and the Ardeche too:

La Djaleï est une pomme issue de la Vallée de Rampon. Elle doit son nom de pomme « gelée » à sa chaire transparente.

La Rouge de Borne est une pomme de la Vallée de la Borne en Ardèche. Réputée pour leur goût acidulé et leur bonne conservation, elle est idéale pour les jus et se déguste également crue.

I’ve finally got round to pruning the Bramley, @Obiwan if you still want some scions, PM me with your address, as written before, I’ll deal with the P&P. In return, if you wish to donate a few € to the site, PM or send a message to @cat; I’m sure the site would appreciate it.
If anyone else wants some, PM me, same pack drill.

Thank you @Wozza for your kind suggestion for Bradley fans.
Monsieur would very much like one to add to his collection of apple trees esp as he very much likes British varieties.
Could you possibly send one our way too please?
I will repay with home produced honey when we are next down your way!
