Didn’t James Bond do that?
Did you know that we have roughly as many hair follicles per unit area of skin as the other great apes, certainly very similar to chimps.
But why does our body hair not appear like that of the great apes? Nature has for some reason made our body hair appear visually insignificant. Maybe the invention of clothing has something to do with it.
Probably the fact that we moved to the plains and needed the ability to lose heat by sweating.
It could be ‘fashion’ in that less hairy males found it easier to mate than the hairier ones. Just as many women now seem to prefer a smoother man to a hairy one. Not all selection pressures are physical.
You may like the scent but what about the taste of it. ? ![]()
After a bout of washing up recently I must have got some raw eau de vaiselle on my fingertips because when I then moved on to shuffling though some papers and briefly licked my fingers to do so, it was 'orrible. Eugh, I will make sure never to do that again and am thankful that I do not wear any kind of after shave on my face, to the distress of my female friends. ![]()
Out of curiosity or sentiment, I’ve just ordered this from Ebay. Or it’s a new toy or gadget, but one to be treasured… it’s what I started shaving with…
I’ve got an old half-full bottle of ordinary eau de cologne and your comment prompted me to spray some on my tongue. It tastes ghastly!
Perhaps one of the things that disinclined me to using scent was the way, after shaking hands with some guys I would meet for business, the smell of their perfume would transfer and then be inescapable for the rest of the day. I work with a number of non European women, and their perfume often transfers to lab coats and even to my clothing. It’s nice in some ways, but there are times at home one does not wish to be reminded.
You mean when your wife/partner smells it:scream:![]()

Sir William is correct:
That thought did occur to me, but fortunately we have enough trust that it’s not a problem. However in some relationships that could be a major problem.
Some people’s does ![]()
I mentioned above that I still use my Granddad’s shaving brush (who died after El Alamein) to wet shave. Inspired by this thread I opened up his rather attractive razor, presumably unused since the late 1930s, and found an intact Gillette blade still in it…not sure I dare use the razor though!
The razor looks a decent one of the type where you twist the top of the handle to change the blade - I’ve got a German one like that (though it certainly come via El Alamein!).
Best to boil the blade to sterilise it.
However Grandad’s shaving brush looks long past it - treat yourself to a decent new badger. I expect my new one to ‘see me out’.
Not @Badger , who is a protected species ![]()
I wish.
In one of my very first French lessons, aged 11, the teacher took great delight in telling me that my surname once translated as “blaireau” is French for a shaving brush.
Sadly it’s also used as a mild insult.
That’s very similar to what I’ve started using and it’s very good once you get used to it.
