Hello Lucy,
Yeh, I don't know much about private insurers in europe. Yes, your right I not being familiar with the rules don't know that you must live in England to be eligible. I know for French covered people that you can still carry your insurance living abroad in certain circumstances etc. In fact we will have to have that for my husband if we go for a few years to the USA and he won't be covered immediatly.
That quote was a lot more reasonable than I accpected. Also, you can't just see a regular doctor at a clinic for the full price and have your normal sniffles and this or that looked at? And just by the meds full price also? I did being that totally out of the system and it didn't seem to be a problem.
Although 5400 euros sounds like a lot for an entire family to me it seems dreadfully reasonable.
Have a good day, seems the cold snap has finished.
Chris
Thank you Chris. I have just looked at the Blue Cross website and it is for the US... Exactly, we are just looking for emergency cover in the event of an over curious child, or heaven forbid, something something more serious. We only use the Doctor for medical certificates to certify them fit for sport and vaccinations, so that is not the issue. Also, for Orthodontic treatment as they get older.
We are too far from the UK and as they were not born there, they only have British passports by default, as both my husband and I are British and born there. Also, I really would feel dis-honest using the NHS in that manner.
Surely there must be a French company who can provide this type of cover, as so many people move here...
Thank you Kevin. I just did an estimate on their website which came up as 5,400 eur per year for all of us. I will contact them to see if there is anyway this can be reduced...
You could just call a one of the big health insurers to get a quote for family rates like Blue Cross Blue Shield to give you an idea. When I first came to France I had a private insurance for students and it was very low and I also bought an emergency flight home insurance in case I had a serious accident through a credit card. When I needed to see a doctor in Paris I just paid the regular fee and they didn't even ask if I had other insurance and it was so low I didn't bother submitting the bills to the insurance.
I find health insurance issues interesting. So you live in europeans living in France. The good thing is that for regular doctor clinic visits you can pay the full fee and it is nominal. So as long as it is regular health services that can be addressed at a doctors clinic you are in luck as it is reasonable in France. Private Health Insurance for your family would be really expensive. Since it seems that you would need something mainly for emergencies like a broken leg on a skiing vacation type thing and kids are accident prone getting a crayon in their ear or something. Maybe just look for ONLY emergency insurance if it's possible.
Also, since you are so close to England and your kids do have an English parent it might be worth at least a glance at what it would take to get on the insurance rolls for England? At least talk to an English nurse or look at the website for signing your kids up. You could go for three days to England easily from France if you needed to make an appearance in person and than do the followup by mail? Or buy some sort of Emergency service insurance to cover hospital stays or ER care. I know that private insurance for a family would be really expensive normally so I don't know if it would be worth it if you are all healthy. I think it can be well over 1000 euro a month easily and perhaps even more expensive.
I would start by calling a few big private insurers for general quotes and perhaps research getting you all on the English rolls although you don't really have a big connection there.
