Is that a reply to my post? Personally I have no trouble mentally translating mph to kph and kph to mph using the 5/8 relationship Peter mentioned. It’s also fairly easy to remember the multiple of 10 conversions. My problem was with the distance to turn units switching from yards to feet as you got closer to a junction.
I have no trouble doing the arithmetic, it is just a mile doesn’t mean anything really to me, whereas a kilometre does - it is like prices in francs vs euros I suppose.

Fortunately, mental arithmetic was one of my favourite lessons at school… 
even now, some folk seem amazed that anyone (me) can add up a list of figures without recourse to a calculator… 
but, I do agree… better to concentrate on the road and its challenges…
