TANSTAAFL as we see here.
Not for me it wouldn’t, due to advancing age and retreating brain power, my understanding of French is much worse now than it was 20 years ago when I was working here and receiving all my instructions in the cab of my lorry and never put a foot wrong. If they demanded a test to allow me to stay here I would have to go back to Blighty.
Only if you want a 10 year card. You can renew annually forever.
Is she sure about that? I have only skimmed the legislation but to me it reads as if it will be required for any multi year renewals unless applicant is in an exempt category. Happy to be proved wrong, but good if was backed with some evidence.
I’m over 65…
From The Local article yesterday: French government unveils details of new civics tests for foreigners
There is already an exemption for people 65 and older from the language test. It appears that there may also be an exemption for people aged 65 and over for the civics test. The Local has requested clarification from the interior ministry.
The test is not required for people who already have a carte de résident and are simply renewing it.
That would be handy. ![]()
Is that cos you think it’d be out of the frying pan into the fire ?
I have a sense of the drawbridge being pulled up, but yes, F-F to an extent too.
The buggers had better not do that before I have a chance to gallop across it! ![]()
Bonne chance avec ça!
Can t you provide an official link - not the Local article. I think that would be helpful to others since some préfectures don’t necessarily know the rules.
If the future is Ultra RW, you & @ChrisMann, shouldn’t have any probs as far as I can fathom, as you’ll be inactive, just here to spend money & on S1 for healthcare. The only things I can think of are that foreigners will not get government help with stuff like renovations/insulation/ heat pumps etc, les cheques d’energie & other stuff like that. I can’t see this coming soon as France at the mo, hasn’t a 2 tyre system, & it’ll be counter productive, though may come in the future, who knows.
They may introduce higher levels of income for foreigners to reside???
I don’t have one. Sorry…
Yes, worth having a chat with Shabana Mahmood, Sue-Ellen Braverman and Priti Patel about that. Leaders in the I’m alright Jack brigade.
Can’t read the content of the link you sent.. only a couple of “comments” from Readers.. ![]()
However, I suspect that by the time current 10-year cards (of any sort) need to be renewed, the whole thing will be crystal clear… ![]()
Well hopefully not, but it’s all slightly nail-biting!
That is a worry too for me - I won’t have a vast amount over the SMIC level from my state and private pensions. Although hopefully I will be paying cash for a house so that would help.
I had considered retiring in Greece as a possibility, but they upped the ante to €30,000 a year income for non-EU retirees, which ruled it out immediately.
Don’t Panic… shades of Dad’s Army ![]()
I know it’s often easier said than done… but ! ![]()
Just toddle along for the moment, enjoying France to the full, as and when you can and, when the time is right, decisions can be made on how best to fulfil one’s dreams.

I know.
But given that even if my mother was to pop off tomorrow, it’s likely to be 18-24 months at least before I can move (what with the slow process of probate etc, and then the visa application), it’s frustrating to be stuck waiting.

As someone who’s only started holidaying in France the last few yrs and very sketchy French ( Duolingo ) it’s about what I expected!
You really shouldn’t say things like that, nobody wants to know they are 2nd choice, and you don’t know who’s reading this.

yes, I do understand..
while you wait you can work on your French and play with as many of these online question thingies that you can find… and that way you are doing something “positive” and working towards being able to do whatever might be asked of you “come the time” .
It’s possible you won’t be asked anything.. but who cares.. working towards it means the waiting time isn’t wasted. Nothing worse than thinking “drat, if only I’d done… when I had the time”
All you can do is your best in whatever situation you find yourself. ![]()
