New veg patch for two

Sawdust also has a habit of pancaking, and forming an impenetrable layer.

For those of us who continue to have major battles with weeds that sounds an excellent idea.

Sawdust is a good way of keeping weeds down if put on garden paths you’ll need a lot of it, any saw mills where you live? Let it break down and then compost the following year. I use rough cut grass à neighbour gives me (see photos higher in the tread) as the beds empty over Winter I use it from the paths to mulch.

My grandma used to use galvanised steel for her raised veg beds. Remember back to when i was a nipper. Would they be any good?

I don’t see why not. We made compost bins out of the corrugated stuff that came off the roof. Not worth buying new for that purpose though.

That’s my winter job in the garden

What is that Griffin?

Building a hadron collider, probably :joy:

Will you line the metal with something? Cardboard? Weed suppressant? I’ve got large metal pans from vide greniers, much cheaper than “proper” pots and I’ve lined them. In fact I don’t think the plants in these pots thrive and I think it’s partly because the sun on the metal heats up and dries out the earth. I wouldn’t do it again.

Loads of corrugated iron sheets from one of the outhouses that we replaced the roof on.

Ooooo for raisedbeds??? If not. Would it work?

Yes it’s for raised beds, 4 x 4 by 2 m, thick black plastic has been down for a year to kill off the mares tail we get everywhere, it’s war with that stuff :yum::laughing:

In Oz a lot of raised beds are done with corregated iron, lots of roofs covered in it so quite crap there!

We are using a lot of our corrugated iron sheets to make compost bins. We have to make new ones as the old ones are now in the wrong place (due to veg patch extension!) and they’ve always worked well.

Yes, we’ve made two compost bins with ones kicking around. Saved the better ones for two raised beds which are now in situ close to the house and a gigantic water butt. Having got the jungle down and cleared we can now see what we have. More than enough fruit to keep our hamlet going. Will need to work on some swaps! Im thrilled we found gooseberries as we adore gooseberry crumble. The quince tree is laden as are the peaches, nectarines, vines and pears…. Will only plant strawberries for more fruit when the time comes. Veg will have to be started from scratch. We are choosing firstly what we like to eat, secondly what is easiest to grow and will give fairly fast results (to keep us motivated). Never had a go before and feel we need results so we don’t get depressed and give up too soon. Plan is start small and expand as we can cope. Any more advice really welcome please
