In the summer of '74 I was a bus conductor for the IoW’s Southern Vectis Omnibus Company and am inclined to agree with your assessment of the local. OTOH many of my colleagues who tended to have more hair than the average bus driver/conductor, worked as many shifts as they could every summer and then cleared off to spend a few months in places like Marrakech.

It’s just English banter - tongue in cheek etc…

We’re just harmless old fools!

To be fair, and coming from just over the water from the Isle of Wigit (as we called it)…the place caught the brunt of numerous jokes. All unfair of course but this article is not far from it:

It’s a lovely place I agree spoilt by the heritage of.Queenie Vic….me thinks

I have memories of lying on the velour upholstered triple back seat of a number 16 pre-War open-topped bus (unusual for that route) going along the south coast of the IoW, where after Blackgang Chine there weren’t any compulsory bus stops for about forty minutes and reading Henry Miller’s Big Sur and the Orangs of Hieronymous Bosch, published on City Lights, SF and somehow weirdly available in a 1970’s bookshop in Ryde. And as the English Channel waves crashed against the cliffs below and the sun shone, I pretended I was in South California on Big Sur.

Uhm — As a Vectonian born and bred, I’m struggling hard not to take offense Sir. Still, I would be interested to know as to which part of the ‘Garden Isle’ it is that has formed your less than favourable opinion.

I spent quite a few happy weeks camping on the IoW as a teen and then visited a couple of times as an adult taking my wife too. 'Tis a nice place, a compact destination that encapsulated many of the pleasing aspects of southern England. No idea what it would be like to actually LIVE there, but I did know someone who drove every day from the Isle to work in Beckenham & return.

Indeed.

You did the right thing. All that other stuff sounds like useless noise!

Yeah, don’t worry. That’s how it landed, hence the “who hurt you?”.

Well I was sad to miss the final year as we would then have got on to 20th century Greek authors and poets such as Seferis, Kazantzakis and Yiannis Ritsos.

And it wasn’t that I didn’t find the earlier stuff interesting (up to a point!) but it was just linguistically hard!

I did enjoy reading the λαικη τραγουδια (traditional popular songs) which we studied early on.

Anyway it’s water under the bridge now. I just wish I remembered more of the language!

Welcome from me too @S_Antoniadis , might well seek your advice in the future re fitness. Brief history, heart attack, loss of 20% of body weight because of lack of eating afterwards, bullied, here and elsewhere into being sensible, now on 3 meals a day and on the upward trend, but very anxious not to replace flesh with flab and went to sign in to a gym yesterday for gentle exercise. Wisely advised to bring a note from my Mum, sorry Doctor, so they get it right.

Enjoy the experience here, it is very useful too. :joy:

Number of times that offensive or discrimnatory remarks that are blamed on english banter… but banter does not mean it’s ok…
