Original or cover version?

Oh come on. Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts is brilliant and so many more. Yes Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower is better and Dylan agreed.

You need to go to a Dylan concert. To quote a friend, her comes on stage, sings and f***s off.

I’m not saying the songs are bad but I’d rather stick pins in my eyes then listen to him.

Chaque personne, chaque goût.

Oh, absolutely, and I said something similar the other day. He’s just never been my tasse de thé.

She Came in Through the Bathroom Window: The Beatles vs Joe Cocker
With a Little Help from My Friends: The Beatles vs Joe Cocker

How about the Willie Nelson version of Always on my Mind…not bad.

Beth Hart singing ‘I’m Going’ Down’ with the Jeff Beck trio. A song associated with Freddie King, in the same way that ‘Red House’ or 'Hey Joe are associated with Jimi Hendrix, but not written by him.

Clapton’s ‘Hideaway’ is better than Freddie King’s original, I think.

All the songs on ‘Howlin’ Wolf. The London Sessions’ are ‘better’ than the originals because the band and the recording are so much better.

Cocaine’ by Clapton and band, live at The Albert Hall, is sooo much superior to J.J. Cale’s original. The piano solo by Chris Stainton is epic.

K.D. Lang did a version of 'Hallelujah’ on a live BBC concert that was just amazing, magnificent.

Light My Fire’ Close call between The Doors and Jose Feliciano.

Lovely version - no idea what the original was.

Fire by The Pointer Sisters v Springsteen original, Pointer Sisters has it for me.
Blinded by the light by Manfred Manns Earth Band v Springsteen, Manfred has it.
Definitely Joe Cocker, With a little help
Both sides now by Judy Collins v Jodi Mitchel original

I’ve been listening to some of the videos posted and @Stella, you like the Tom Ball version of Sound of Silence. Watching the video reminded me very much of the same response from Simon Cowell to Susan Boyle when she sang ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ but if you have a moment, please listen to the version by Disburbed - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4.

@SuePJ - I believe Little Green Apples was first sung by Roger Miller.

@DrNickJ - Willie Nelson’s version of Always on my Mind - not bad you say. I say 100 times better than the Brenda Lee and Elvis Presley versions.

And @captainendeavour - wow - K D Lang singing 'Hallelujah’ is absolutely fabulous and is definitely one that I will add to my playlist.

Interestingly enough, this song is doing the rounds again. There are a couple of versions out at the moment. I’ve heard them on Alouette radio station recently following the reopening of The Notre Dame Cathedral). There’s a super version by Vianney - a French singer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GKbDSO34JU - it’s got the English translation on the video.

And whilst writing, this talk about favourite records takes me back many years when I lived in London. My favourite radio station was Capital Radio (Capital FM) and every year they ran a promotion where you were invited to send in your top three favourite records and they would compile a list of the top 500 where they would get to the No. 1 on January 1st (or something like that). At the time, songs like Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody vied for the No. 1 position. I don’t know what the top 10 would be today but I saw this list on the internet for 2006. Capital FM Hall Of Fame Top 500 - NBJ - Everything Else

Obviously there are newer songs on the 2024 list but even in 2006 there were still loads of the golden oldies. I’ve got to have a long hard think to come up with 3 of my favourites. It would probably come from a final list of 10 to be whittled down. But Led Zeppelin would definitely figure in my list.

I absolutely agree…I would rather listen to Willie’s version than anyone else’s.

Not sure which is “original” - Mary’s song, was first recorded by Baez.
