you need to be pacsés otherwise your partner won't be recognised as such under French taxation and will have 60% inheritance tax to pay (0% if you're pacsés). Unfortunately France has nothing like common law partner, my OH is French, we have kids together but still haven't got round to getting pacsed :-(
