Pau, France - any thoughts on living there as an ex-pat?

But, you’ve no experience of either.

I’m sorry, but you are champion of the zero value ad comments. I can’t count the number of your posts that start with “I know nothing about this, but” FFS if you know nothing about something…say nothing.

Now I do acknowledge you maybe at home, bord and SFs a good resource for you, as it is for us all, but let’s keep our advisory posts as factual as we can.

Good grief… I’ve missed this News..

Always meant to get to Pau for the GPrix. For many years Brother in Law would lead a group of Brits driving from UK down to Pau and we always intended to join him “next year” but never managed it.

I hope you will be able to go next year, but the eco-warriors in their quest to quell anyone else’s fun are gaining momentum, so it is perilous after that I fear!

Too grumpy!

and a bit too rude

Not really in the spirit of SF (IMHO)

Suggest you go back to bed, have a lie in, and then get out on the right side of the bed. This comment is pointless and rude (and needs a spell check) especially from someone who specialises in reposting freely available guardian articles.

It was a joke!

and if we can only post on subjects we know about, SF is going to be very quiet in the future

One of the great advantages of SF (at least as I see it) is the transfer of useful, helpful knowledge, and views. I reckon I learn something interesting, useful and helpful virtually every single day, including about subjects I optimistically think I know something about!

Exactly, I have often posted something I thought was helpful only to be corrected (politely) that my knowledge was faulty.

I understand my attempt at humour didn’t land well with everyone. Such is life.

That looked very interesting when I saw a visit to Pau either on The Grand Tour or Top Gear one time and Clarkson and co did a tour of it in supercars.

Have you got any links to this? All I’ve heard is problems over financing the event. It is run by an association and costs well over €2,000,000 to prepare. In general there is a lot of local support because it brings a lot of money into the town’s businesses. I am well aware that a tightening of the rules and what’s allowed in several other motorsport events by the FFSA is Carson concern but there’s a big difference between mamby pambies (sic) and safety.

There’s a lot of humour that passes me by but I tend to think that’s on me rather than the humourist.

The humour worked for me. Yours nearly always does (unlike some  )

Re the Pau Grand Prix… I’ve just done a little digging.

The organisers get a local subvention (grant) of 200,000€ but need private sponsors to cough up the rest.

Vehicles with modern fuels/technology are being suggested for some events, in addition to the existing historic vehicle races. Hopefully this will attract new/more sponsors with deep pockets.

No Grand Prix since 2023… not date yet set for 2026, but fingers are crossed :crossed_fingers:

Did I at least get the Silver in the Zero Value Post competition?

@John_Scully can’t hear you: he’s found his old Southern Rock albums and is playing them at full volume

And the rest is over €2,000,000.

As you’ve already mentioned that figure, I hadn’t thought it necessary to mention it again…

Pau is a medium-sized town, and quite pretty and lively with a beautiful boulevard that is a viewpoint for all the many local peaks: the name plaques along the balustrade are placed so as to triangulate the peaks via a chimney spire. Also some nice historic buildings as others have mentioned.

It’s a great location for hiking, road and mountain biking, river activities and also some skiing. Plus you are an hour-ish from Biarritz/Bayonne and less than that from Spain via a tunnel or pass. Plus wine areas immediately to the south.

No idea about the expat community but it is something of an oil company hub for some reason, so there are definitely anglophone activities.

Overall, well worth a look! But completely different vibe to the Alps.
