When is day not a day. Seems simpler to me to have a clear cut off that any numpty should be able to work out. 24 hours is pretty simple.

This was exactly as our vet recommended to cover the four years we went back and forth to UK three or four times a year before emigrating to France. Worked perfectly.
Ideed it is, and I would have adhered to it were it to be so, but it wasn’t at that point stipulated and thus I had no problems. 
Why have a rule that doesnt make any sense when the medication is given it begins to work, no need to have 24 hours at all, so long as its done before leaving unless there is a medical reason which I wait to hear.
Much better than waiting 5 days followed by a 24 hour window to cross the border.
That is true. When we moved here, the vet gave our dog another rabies jab (only 9 months after her previous UK jab)), and registered her with Icad . She then issued her French passport there and then.
I would have thought when the job was finished would be more important than when they start working but I don’t have animals so could be taking nonsense.
Exactly John but thats not the issue, its must be 24 hours but why? Its a rule for rules sake. Unless someone can explain why, just causes a few people an issue at the port of departure.
It shouldn’t cause anyone an issue if they actually read what the rules are. It’s not complicated.

Yes agreed, but some seem to get caught out so for simplifying our lives, scrap daft rules!
I’m still struggling to see why it’s a daft rule. I know you have a bee in your bonnet about having to follow rules but what’s the issue?
You say that the treatment starts to work after a few hours but how long does it take to be sure that the infestation has been eradicated? Closer to 24 hours perhaps?

I am not a vet, but I would imagine that any medication is going to take a different amount of time to fully take effect in different animals (large vs. small for example) just as it does in people.
Therefore having a 24 hour requirement is presumably to make sure that the pill has done its job regardless of the breed or size of dog.
Imagine the fun if a bureaucrat decided that the wait time was on a sliding scale depending on the type and weight of dog i.e. 4 hours for chihuahuas and 36 hours for Great Danes…

Nor am I and I don’t even keep any animals so can’t begin to understand why it’s 24 hours. I suspect others in the debate can’t either, it’s just a reflexive reaction to authority.

Science tells us that to be sure no horrid parasitic tapeworms end up in UK, the medicine needs to kill said worms and for them to then all be expelled from the animal. Unfortunately, not all the worms will definitely be dead at first. Worms are definitely not wanted in UK, so 24 hours will hopefully ensure they are pooped out in France (or wherever they come from in EU.)
As every pet owner knows, not every animal poops on cue as others. Laws cannot be applied depending on whether each traveller presents a St Bernard or a Chiuahua, a kitten or a ferret, so 24 hours safely covers all sizes and varieties.
Them’s the rules. Travel is optional.

Dog worming tablets typically start working within 2 to 6 hours after administration. Some worms may be dissolved or expelled in the dog’s stool or vomit within the first few days, and visible worms may be seen for up to a week after treatment.
So most likely still expelling once back in the UK.
To a degree because experts run our lives without any sense to what they say. Years ago on public information films the expert would wear a white lab coat to further enhance the bs

Well the drug may start working in a few hours, but it’s likely to take further time to have its full effect. The 24 hours specified are likely the result of clinical trials that measured how long it takes for the drug to complete its work plus a suitable safety buffer.
