I find some of the above startling to say the least, not that I am going to take ‘my’ dogs abroad, but our vet insists that the rabies jab in France lasts 3 years. ![]()
Thanks David, all useful to know, maybe some vets want people coming back each year €€
Or there could be different jabs involved, some more long-term than others? I don’t know.
Well yes thats a little obvious, the 3 year one would surely make more financial sense for an owner?
I specialise in the obvious. ![]()
Not currently having a pet, I don’t know if vets give you a choice of jab flavours or they just “use what they use”.
Our Airedale Vita was born in 2009 and lived 12 years and I still have her passport (of course). Her rabies vaccines started in 2009 and were annual. They were Eurican CHPPi2 and I think no longer exist.
In 2015 our vet gave her Rabisan which was/is a three-yearly vaccine. If I remember correctly it was a combination of vaccine development and a recognition by vets and French government that 3-yearly vaccines give sufficient protection.
I believe annual vaccines are still available. Vets have different prevention strategies, some preferring less powerful/more frequent treatments (eg monthly treatments for tics etc rather than 3-monthly). It is not always about the money.
Hopefully you are right Sue, our previous UK vet always charged a consultation fee even when just giving a booster. Hence ex vet.
I have been very struck by the restrained approach of various French vets, who seem to have the animal’s best interests at heart. They appear to wish to avoid over-prescribing, happy to patiently wait and see how initial low impact treatments work out, rather than going all in with the big bazooka treatment at the outset, and being generally good value etc etc…A real contrast with our UK vets who were subsequently taken over by Private Equity backers, instantly raising fees, prescribing more expensive medicines, sacking experienced staff and replacing them with far less experienced staff etc.
Here is yet another rabies vaccine in France, Versican, that is 3 yearly, this one being prescribed by the vet working at a major rescue centre.
Very true in my experience, our local vet, many years ago treated one of my dogs for a skin infection, he then told me of a medicine he had in stock for onward treatment and avoidance but advised me that if I went to a supermarket and bought something called ‘4 oils’ and put a spoonful in their dinner every day, there would be no re-occurrance and much more cheaply.
Farage as UK PM? Made I larf!! Ain’t never going to happen. Brexit will be reversed at some point as cutting EU links will cripple Britain. It has already achieved nothing
