It may seem stupid but it is the number of metres from your cross road, this is now the norm nation wide.
I am supremely grateful for the numbering system used here - gives me and any visitors a good idea how far along the road I have to drive, which in rural France can be a long way (we are over 2km from our cross-roads so our road number is 2XXX.
It also means we have no fuss now from delivery vans who used to claim not to be able to find us, or would deliver to the neighbouring farmhouse two fields away because they have the same lieu-dit.
Iâd rather know in an emergency that the fire brigade or ambulance would know exactly where to come. ![]()
There are 12 houses in our hamlet. Our number is over 1000. And our woodshed and garage also have numbers, which are different. I know how and why it is numbered as it is. But in our case itâs not terribly helpful. Our neighbour recently had a health emergency, the sapeurs couldnât locate their house with the number and my neighbour sent gps coordinates so that they could be found.
The road splits in 2 at one point, but has the same name, and because of the method thatâs been used, distance from Mairie, I was told, there are 2 houses with the same address. Which, I donât think is terribly helpful.
Sounds like you and your neighbours have been unlucky.
Fortunately La Poste know whoâs where!
Sadly this is not always the case.
We have friends in a neighbouring commune, which also happens to be in the next department. Their new numbering is unrelated to the distance from a junction/main road.
Their old lieu dit was erased & they have a house number that is now determined by where they are in the quantity of properties either side of a main route which starts back in their village (odd numbers to one side, evens to the other).
They are down an impasse from the main route which is now their address, at number 29, but are probably 3 or 4 kms away from the start of the counting. In other words the number doesnât really help with distance, but at least if youâve found number 27 you know to keep going.
Oh that is silly, why not do it as everywhere else is!
Wow now I get why you arenât keen, thatâs crazy!
I know⊠We have another friend in the same illogical department (50) but in a different commune & their new number does not reflect distance either.
