Is there any point trying to spot Uranus or Neptune with a 60mm refractor? Neither is going to look like a disc, I guess, and so they’ll just be points of light (-ie they will both look like stars). Which is brighter, anyway?
Thanks.
Neptune will just look pretty much like a blue star. You can resolve the disk of Uranus but it entirely depends upon local conditions and the scope itself.
A shed on wheels is much more fun though ![]()
Indeed

What’s more interesting than William Herschel is his sister Caroline. She was a very accomplished astronomer in her own right, never in the shadow of her brother, and was the first woman to be paid a government salary for her scientific work. She’s probably the female figure in the picture you added, talking to William.
OK, I am blaming you :smile I am now tired.
I was wide awake at 02:00, mmm I will just take a look. Back in the house at 04:30 and frozen solid.
The moon was too bright for anything serious, but the atmosphere was clear and very little disturbance.
yes I think there is some likelihood that she did a lot of the work for which he got the credit, as was the way in those days…
Same here. Although last night was a no go, tonight is showing OK on Clear Outside, but 90% moon rising at around 9.30pm. I’m not going to bother as I’m full of the flu anyway.
Get better, I have avoided it so far.
Tonight we have freezing fog forecasted so likewise not tonight. Saturday is looking good.
