Absolutely everything is ‘at a price’ in Comptoir Irlandais. I went in one in Toulon once but didn’t spend more than a few minutes before beating a hasty retreat ![]()
I guess if people want exotic foreign foods then they should expect to pay handsomely.
I have a recipe for gingernuts very easy turned out brilliantly. Last time I subbed my favourite bland olive oil instead of butter and it created an excellent ‘snap’ in the finished cooled biscuit and definitely did not deteriorate the taste.
The trouble with gingernuts is they can burn easily. You have to watch them like a hawk, make sure they do get brown as there is nothing as bad as a flaccid gingernut, then whip them out of the oven just when they could burn if left. Not difficult to make otherwise.
In the UK Aldi’s were OK and I’d never bother making them with the choice available.
