Religious bully displays a lack of a sense of irony

No need to say sorry…
We each have our own opinions on a wide variety of subjects… some of which I have no intention of airing on this public forum.

and, as I have said… no one should try and read anything into my decision…

There is a new advert on UK tv doing that. Very heartening.

I am shocked to seeing such a matter being discussed on a forum such as this. This matter ONLY concerns the USA and its people and certainly not Britain or France or citizens thereof. For me completely off subject and nothing more than a provocation.

Why?

Free speech and all that, surely?

'This matter ONLY concerns the USA and its people and certainly not Britain or France or citizens thereof. ’

While I can understand the First Amendment of the US Consitution only directly applying to US citizens or residents, I find it a more than tad weird that you’re suggesting it’s provocative for others to discuss US politics. The term ‘fascism’ is being increasingly applied to Republican attempts to control US society - are you on the fascist side of the line?

On SF we’ll discuss whatever we want! And, are you really ‘shocked’ or was this just hyperbole?

I think the implications of your post make it one of the most unfortunate that I’ve read on SF

Sadly, even very sadly, where the USA goes tends to influence quite a bit of the world particularly English-speaking countries and diaspora like us.

It would be great if no one commented on it here because it didn’t matter but unfortunately it does.

It matters to us not only because of US influence, but because we all share a common humanity.
We care about what happens to people everywhere, whether or not it has any direct effect on us.

Why? We can discuss anything we want to discuss. No man is an island.

“The UK government is coming under growing pressure from European countries and human rights groups to explain why commitments to abortion and sexual health rights have been removed from an official statement on gender equality.”

[UK under international pressure over deletion of abortion commitments | Global development | The Guardian]

Never underestimate what this morally bankrupt British government will do on the quiet.

Hum. Geoff I think you are overestimating the breadth of generosity of the human spirit in all but a few cases

If so, that’s sad for most people - since generosity of spirit is actually the key to their own happiness…

All I can say is that you are easily shocked :joy:

Hello, I thought, erroneously it seems, that this forum, going by its name, was specifically devoted to Brits living in France who used it to discuss problems encountered by people moving here and problems to do with French administration and law, buying houses, and, why not, even French politics. As I moved to France 42 years ago, I have a certain experience of these matters and thought that I might be useful in certain cases to help people out on particular points. I certainly did not join to discuss international politics! However, on reading a certain number of posts, it appears that a certain number of the contributors are loony lefties who want to bring politics into it “coûte que coûte” and I think the final straw was someone criticising abortion legislation in the USA, and another implying that the Republican party was supposedly akin to " fascist", I thought to myself "I am not in the right place! There are also some people harping on about Brexit which for me is water under the bridge and which is the result of a democratic decision of the British people, even if I personally would have preferred the UK to remain in the EU. One needs to move on. And for me, that is what I will do by participating no further.

There are certainly some very prominent left-wing voices here. But don’t let that put you off: some of them are probably quite pleasant when you get to know them  And it’s important for democracy to put alternative points of view.

I just scroll past the things I’m not interested in.

To be fair this is probably one of the most French of French forums , there’s a few that you would barely know were meant to be about France

Insulting forum members is not going to win you any friends, it is also against the site T&C.

If you want conversations about France and French life, start some. If all you want to do is complain that the existing conversations are not to your taste, well no one is forcing you to engage in those topics.

Is there no defence of fair comment, billy?
