we have 2 cuves… plastic ones though… not metal…
anyway, we had to have the heating oil itself cleaned… as well as the tanks … as particles/dust/whatever had polluted both tanks over several years… and this was causing problems with the oil-fired boiler.
It was fascinating to observe the specialist at work and (if I recall correctly) it cost us around 400€.
Money well spent. We didn’t lose any oil through wastage… phew…
We know we must replace the whole setup at some stage but with what… I have no idea. When we win euromillions perhaps.
We are using more wood and thus reducing oil consumption accordingly.
Actually I thought that the reply from the dechetterie was possibly better than I would have expected! At least you didn’t get an outright ‘Non’.
Do you have a friendly artisan who could cut it up, rinse it a bit, then transport it as scrap to the dechetterie for a ‘suitably convenient’ form of payment and amount? I seem to recall a figure being suggested locally (here) of 100€…
If I recall correctly, they pumped the oil through a rockwool filter and stored it apart, while they then cleaned out the sludge/whatever residing at the bottom of the tank.
Once each tank was pristine… the now sparkling-clean oil was pumped back into it…
The bill included a charge of 70€ for the safe disposal of the sludge/whatever at a
site which safely deals with such stuff.
No way did we want a cowboy polluting the soil/waterways.
Back in UK, we were on well-water for more than 20 years.
Some bright spark fly-tipped an old engine with some waste diesel into the ditch next door… and it ended up polluting our supply… only happened the once, but the experience has made us very sensitive to the hazards of such cowboy antics.
We have 2 oil tanks 500l each and steel. The firm that fitted the stoves said it wasn’t a problem and is charging 150 euros for removal through a 3rd party. Hasn’t actually happened yet, though.
