Run free, Charlie... Run free 😢

The thing about dogs is that they reach into your chest and hold your heart forever. I’m sorry for your loss. Run pain free Charlie!

I have had German Shepherds for 40 years and 2 years ago I had to have Cool put on the route for the kennel in the sky, his back was gone. My superb vet came as soon as I had phoned and said this is it, he cannot go on, and he lay in the back of her big car and we stroked him on his way. Many tears. I asked her to say truthfully if I was past having another, lame, appalling back, too old? She looked me up and down and said ā€œgo for itā€ and I did so, and he is very hard work and ravishingly beautiful, intelligent, destructive all of it. but no regrets. A dog will be always part of my life. Well, the small swimming pool is not covered and he likes to hurl himself in and then come rushing into the kitchen to shake. My fault, a friend took some superb pics of him in full flight jumping in after his floating ball. Oh well….keeps the floor clean! I hope you two will find another pal, I’m sure you will.

You are not ridiculous. How dreadful if one couldn’t cry after 70 for such a friend

I know what you mean Kate. We’ve got a mobile phone but I don’t use it. I only read the text messages for Stuart (his eyesight isn’t the best). I don’t even know how to send a text message and as for apps! You’re talking another language when anyone mentions those. So I do understand. Anyway, see what your friend can do for you. And I’m sure you’re not an old :cow: !

You could get a patient and helpful young person to teach you, it would really be worth it.

Unfortunately vero we don’t know any ā€˜young person’ who may be able to help. The majority of our friends are in the older age bracket and probably in the same position as us.

Neither do we, which is why I find ChatGPT immensely helpful and incredibly patient, especially as I explain at the beginning that I don’t understand techie stuff at all and please to use very simple language (yes, I know the please isn’t really necessary). My great success was getting broadband down to our cottage, about 100m away. I had to keep saying ā€œI don’t understandā€ which saying to a techie person very quickly gets immensely irritating for them. But is no problem for ChatGPT, in fact rather the reverse as they offer to provide more info.

Sorry, I know going off topic, but it is useful to be able to share photos, especially of adored dogs. Ours is at a kennels today to see if she will be happy there - like first day at school, I’m the worried Mum.

There are a lot of workshops/ short courses aimed specifically at helping seniors get to grips with technology. There’s a national programme plus local ones too. Ask at your mĆ©diathĆØque, marie or search online. Generally they are free and part of the national effort to keep people safe and healthy in their own homes.

It’s really worth doing. My mum was able to stay in her own home until her end partly because she got to grip with the technology of the day,

That’s the sort of thing I was thinking of - so helpful.

If we have to leave our dogs in a pension, the owner we use posts a video of all the dogs each day on her Facebook page. It costs her nothing and it is very reassuring to watch your ā€œchildrenā€ having fun with new friends.

Thanks Mik, you’ve reminded me - the woman who is looking after Rona does the same - just had a look. All well. (Because I never go on FB I’d forgotten she offers this)

Hey! A sad loss, but go out and get another dog! Surely you are fit enough at 70 to handle another bundle of joy!? Maybe a rescue in dire need of a good life? We had our present dog when we were both 78. We lost our son just after Walter came to us, but he has been a life saver! What’s the point in festering in the house, when you can experience the great feeling of walking with someone who doesn’t care about your age, what you wear, how fast you go, but just loves you for what you are! His saviour!

Very sorry for your loss.

Similar story to when Wonder Dog left this place.

Worst day of my life.

Almost six years on, I still well up when I’m reminded of it.

Getting emotional at such a loss.. means one is human :+1:

Hi Stella

I learned yesterday that my house & workshop have just been broken into again.

I’m having hassle with LaPoste because I can’t access my account online.

The only good thing that has happened is the lightening-fast response I received from FAB insurance regarding what’s needed for a potential claim on my house insurance policy.

I stop by here occasionally, but I think that I’ll be visiting a bit more often as this latest event has made me aware of things I’ve been putting off for too long.

Anyway, I don’t want to hijack this thread with my tales of First World problems.

Right, back to reminiscing about loved ones that are no longer with us.

Urgh horrors horrible feeling quite apart from the admin tediousness.

Quite.

My neighbour sent me photos of the interior of the house…I have no words.

The workshop is in more than disarray.

So far, everyone involved has been more than helpful.

I’m just in the process of making arrangements to go over to see for myself.
