Satellite TV ending 2029

Why’s it not secure?

How is he broadcasting then? And I say this as someone who started their career doing compliance for broadcasters so I know a little about this…

Can you imagine our parents being told you and your every move are being watched, they would be horrified. And its all to make the ultra rich, ultra more rich.

People keep freaking out about the tech, but tech isn’t the problem, advertising is the problem.

Google got a $1B fine last week for damaging childrens’ mental health. Sounds impressive? Google made $112B profit in the second quarter. A billion here, a billion there, what the heck. It doesn’t matter to them.

As I keep wittering on, these (Google, FB, X and all the other rubbish) are not “tech companies”, they are advertising companies (notwithstanding X is also a propaganda company).

Apple and Microsoft ARE tech companies so they should be regulated appropriately. For example MS needs to be held to account for allowing their AI to be used by the Israeli death squads (AKA IDF) to kill tens of thousands of women and children in Gaza.

On the other hand the way to manage rogue companies like Google, FB, X,et al is to restrict their ability to advertise in the EU. A three month advertising ban on Google would hit them where if hurts and render their algorithms irrelevant for the duration.

We need politicians and functionaries with a deeper understanding of what is going on and the courage to act.

Yes K …By Broadcaster I mean say TRT or Al Jeezera or France 24 or BBC channel making their own editorial decisions and which cannot be prevented by the Dutch or German or Spanish compliance regulator… Basically all Terrestrial TVs are controlled by their National authorities ..which presumably you were aware . The exact same is true with Terrestrial TV distributed by internet links.

And yes Badger a smart TV without internet access cannot report back . But most are ..otherwise why buy a smart TV. .. Currently advertiser’s are interested in averages not individuals ..but the term is increased granularity so when they can get individualised they will

And finally Lapin .. VPNs are breakable …

I am old enough to have read 1984 before 1984 ..and Big Brother

How do they get playout?

Bolox, why bother :face_with_hand_over_mouth: with all due respect, They are just companies and if they are prosecuted in the right jurisdiction with the right charges they will probably spill the beans on their clients anyway.

I don’t think you have fully thought through the different privacy technologies. I share your concerns about privacy but I think you have your knickers in a conspiracy theory twist. The fact is that “surveillance” and data gathering is already far worse than you can imagine. It’s not Governments that’s doing it, it’s advertising companies, Google, Meta, X, Linkedin, et al.

I’m afraid reading 1984 prior to 1984 doesn’t give one any particular insight over those who read it before or after. It was on my school reading list and I’m seventy-three (though I can’t believe it’j.

How would you contrast it with Brave New World.

Pass me the Soma.

Yes, that is the plan and terrestrial TV around 2035. I wonder how long it will take folks to take down the redundant antennas and dishes.

In my home here in France I have already abandoned satellite and set up a VPN in the house using a router from Liberty Shield which provides a UK network to all devices without the need to install apps o each device. Mobile phone, PC, Tablet, TV etc all connect through the router. I thoroughly recommend Liberty Shield. Inevitably with VPNs the IP address will get detected and blocked. On the few occasions when I have needed to contact Libery Shield’s Tech Services, their response is quick and helpful. The company is based in Scotland. I purchased the pre-configured WiFi 6. Router

A well thought out VPN is not in of itself unbreakable, but like with anything. if you have enough time to invest to find software vulnerabilities, use social engineering and/or are a government who can subpoena a VPN company that keeps records (most don’t) then a VPN connection could be monitored and decoded. But why on earth would some entity go to such lengths to find out if I’m watching the BBC from France ? It’s preposterous.
Some people spend so much time and angst worrying about whether their data is safe from governments that they don’t stop to think why governments may be that interested in them. I compare this attitude to those who believe in aliens and fear being abducted and ‘probed’. The question is always ‘why’ ?

True - but it does introduce yet another organisation that you need to trust. You have just replaced one organisation which sees your traffic with another - and as M. Lapin says the fact is that VPN companies have fallen over pretty quickly in the face of requests from law enforcement. Ultimately I am not clear that I would trust the companies involved more than I would trust a random ISP.

There are legit uses for VPNs - I would argue that circumventing geographic controls is amongst them but they are all too often sold by telling people that their internet connection is not secure without one - which is stretching the truth quite a bit.

I assume you are referring to uplinks and the Satellite owners ..Well there are a lot of satellites and a lot o Uplink locations

Most of the above goes over my head, literally, but I wonder if it could have something to do with the loss of my You Tube by satellite, while it still goes on strong on the PC?

No ..I am not a conspiracy nutcase ..I rarely think about it . But I dislike hypocrisy . ..And the naive belief that it’s all for these best . ..and that we live in the best possible world. And yes I get disgusted with the amount of information we have handed over mindlessly to corporations

Does Sir mean that they used to watch You Tube on their TV by an app inside of their satellite receiver?

I know that most people on this site are UK originated and therefore SKY UK is significant .. But other countries and providers are making plans for at least another decade .. In France TNTSAT and FRANSAT are changing encryption but no intention of stopping services.

I agree totally.

Rest assured Dan, I don’t think anybody on here believes that:slightly_smiling_face:

Only the pessimists, and they know it.

Most of all my stuff comes from the US and Eire. Got rid of Sky back in 2012 and satellite dishes are not allowed on this lotissement so everything is internet based via fibre

Yes I think so, Eddie set it up for me at the same time as he did Netflix, since voluntarily stopped. He’s had a look at it and thinks the TV is at fault but it isn’t that old.
